62 Black Sea Watch Trailer
In this under-the-radar thriller from January, Kevin Macdonald (How I Live Now, The Last King of Scotland) directs Jude Law as a rogue submarine captain who recruits a crew of misfits to go after Nazi gold rumored to be lost in the depths of the Black Sea. Despite finding some credibility issues in the story, critics generally liked the film, especially Law's performance.

46 Fifty Shades of Grey Watch Trailer
The first film adaptation of E.L. James's unlikely best-seller comes from screenwriter Kelly Marcel (Saving Mr. Banks) and director Sam Taylor-Johnson (Nowhere Boy), with Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan starring as Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey, respectively. Despite lackluster (if unsurprising) reviews, Fifty Shades grossed more than $560 million worldwide, and a sequel is on the way in 2017. The Blu-ray adds an unrated version of the movie.
42 Lost River Watch Trailer
Ryan Gosling's directorial debut is ... not a good movie. But it's not for a lack of ambition. The film is a dark fantasy starring Christina Hendricks as a mother of two boys struggling to save her home; Saoirse Ronan, Ben Mendelsohn, and Eva Mendes co-star. Critics found it derivative and overindulgent, though nice to look at, and at least one reviewer suggested that it could develop a cult following. One highlight: the soundtrack, from Chromatics' Johnny Jewel.
94 Mr. Turner Watch Trailer
Director Mike Leigh's films almost always earn praise from reviewers, but this biopic about British landscape painter J.M.W. Turner (played by Timothy Spall) had critics more excited than ever, placing it among 2014's highest-scoring films. It also picked up four Oscar nominations, though it was omitted from the major categories.
89 Selma Watch Trailer
One film that did pick up a best picture nomination this year—even as it was controversially shut out of all other major categories—is Ava DuVernay's examination of an eventful period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (David Oyelowo) led three protest marches from Selma, Alabama to the state capital in Montgomery, ultimately resulting in President Lyndon B. Johnson (Tom Wilkinson) signing the Voting Rights Act into law. Selma is DuVernay's second critically praised film in a row (following her 2012 feature debut Middle of Nowhere), and up next for the director is Hurricane Katrina-themed drama that will reunite her with Oyelowo.
87 Winter Sleep Watch Trailer
Though it failed to earn a foreign-language Oscar nomination, this Turkish drama about the divide between the haves and have nots in Anatolia from director Nuri Bilge Ceylan (Once Upon a Time in Anatolia) is not without its share of honors—most notably, winning last year's Palme d'Or as the top film of the Cannes Film Festival.

51 Blackhat Watch Trailer
Michael Mann’s first feature since 2009’s Public Enemies looks at the world of cybercrime through the actions of those trying to prevent it. The globetrotting thriller stars Chris Hemsworth and Viola Davis, but it also represents a rare misfire for Mann, with his worst reviews in over three decades.
22 The Cobbler Watch Trailer
Are Adam Sandler's powers so strong that he could turn a formerly unimpeachable writer-director (Tom McCarthy, The Station Agent) into an overnight dud? Admittedly, the disaster that is The Cobbler does not rest on its stars shoulders alone. The film traces the story of a shoe repairman who discovers he has the ability to step into the lives of his customers. (Yes, you guessed it: by literally walking in their shoes.) The ridiculous screenplay is the main culprit, with critics finding the result so spectacularly bad that it is almost worth seeing (though its offensiveness negates whatever joys that might otherwise provide).
72 Still Alice Watch Trailer
This adaptation of Lisa Genova’s 2007 novel stars Julianne Moore in an Oscar-winning performance as a Columbia University linguistics professor struggling with early-onset Alzheimer's disease. It's the final film from the married writing-directing team of Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland (The Last of Robin Hood), as the former died shortly after Moore's Oscar win.

72 American Sniper Watch Trailer
What was the highest-grossing film released in 2014? Surprise: it's 84-year-old Clint Eastwood’s adaptation of Chris Kyle’s autobiography. American Sniper stars Bradley Cooper as a Navy SEAL sniper who recorded the most kills of any American military sniper in history during multiple tours of duty in the Iraq War. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including best picture, though it did draw some controversy for how it portrayed Kyle (and the war in general) and for its deviations from actual events.
29 Hot Tub Time Machine 2 Watch Trailer
John Cusack is out, but Adam Scott, Gillian Jacobs, and Thomas Lennon are in (along with returning stars Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, and Clark Duke, of course) for this sequel to the surprise 2010 hit Hot Tub Time Machine. You may want to lower your expectations, and then lower them again: critics mostly panned the latest film, finding it "boring" and "monotonous."
92 Leviathan Watch Trailer
Andrey Zvyagintsev’s follow-up to Elena received some of the best reviews at last year's Cannes Film Festival, where Zvyagintsev (and co-writer Oleg Negin) walked away with the best screenplay award. Set in a small town in Northwest Russia, the story follows Kolya, an auto mechanic struggling to hold on to his house and business despite the maneuvering of the town’s mayor. Even though the film serves as a critique of Russia’s government, Leviathan was submitted as the country's official entry into the foreign language Oscar competition, and it ultimately received a nomination.
