    The story unfolds in the 1870’s and follows the romance of two people from different ethnic backgrounds: Jimmie Sue, a white farm boy and Madeleen, a colored sharecropper girl. The story revolves around the teenagers but it also gives a poignant glimpse of real relationships between races that flourished in the post-civil war period as well as the historical and cultural realities of the times.

    About the Author


    E. Reid Gilbert grew up in the hills of North Carolina. He attended several colleges and earned five academic degrees, including a PhD in Asian Theatre. He has worked in various fields such as the Methodist and Unitarian ministries, college professorships, acting and theatre. While on Fulbright assignments in India and Thailand, he gained perspective on his own cultural roots and has written theatre scripts, poetry and a previous book that explored those Appalachian mores and values.
