Eagles make Michigan power plant their winter home
MONROE, Mich. (AP) — A Michigan utility has welcomed a flock of feathered visitors to the state's biggest power plant this winter.
Close to 200 bald eagles have taken up residence at the plant in Monroe. DTE Energy is happy to host the raptors when the temperatures drop and has set aside 800 acres along Lake Erie for wildlife habitat preservation.
The eagles are drawn to the factory's warm water discharge that provides easy access to fish and a wooded area where the people-shy birds can roost.
The public is only allowed to visit once a year, and the plant's hundreds of employees are too busy working to get in their way.
Eagles also spend winters at power plants in other cold weather states, including Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
