    Earnings Preview: Dish Network to report for 3Q

    NEW YORK (AP) — Satellite television provider Dish Network Corp., which has been losing subscribers in recent quarters, could offer details on its plan for adding new businesses when it reports its third-quarter results before the market opens Monday.

    WHAT TO WATCH FOR: How Dish Network is changing. Apparently not content to be the No. 2 satellite broadcaster, after DirecTV Group Inc., Dish has this year has bought bankrupt video-store chain Blockbuster and announced plans to build a wireless data network.

    Investors will be particularly keen for details on the wireless network, an expensive undertaking. Dish has applied to regulators for permission to repurpose satellite spectrum it bought last year for ground-based wireless service, but hasn't said when it would want to build a network or how many people it would cover.

    Other wireless data networks are planned and in progress, and Dish could save money by partnering with another company.

    Investors will also be looking at subscriber figures. Dish has lost subscribers in three out of the last four quarters, and the second quarter was the first in which the U.S. satellite industry lost subscribers overall.

    Analyst Jason Bazinet at Citigroup expects Dish's losing streak to continue, including a net loss of 86,000 subscribers in the third quarter.

    DirecTV posted a blowout 327,000 net U.S. additions in the quarter, helped by its NFL Sunday Ticket.

    After last year's third quarter, Dish declared a surprise one-time dividend of $2 per share.

    WHY IT MATTERS: Dish is the third-largest provider of pay-TV service to U.S. homes, with 14.1 million subscribers.

    WHAT'S EXPECTED: Analysts polled by FactSet expects Dish to post earnings of 74 cents per share on sales of $3.64 billion.

    LAST YEAR'S QUARTER: Dish reported a profit of $81 million, or 18 cents per share, on revenue of $2.89 billion.
