    Earnings preview: McDonald's 3Q

    OAK BROOK, Ill. (AP) — McDonald's Corp., the world's largest burger chain, reports third-quarter results before the stock market opens Friday, seeking to extend a long string of sales gains.

    WHAT TO WATCH FOR: McDonald's has outperformed its fast-food peers throughout the recession and its aftermath because it has been able to adapt quickly, both to customers' changing tastes and to the slowdown in the U.S. economy. Its low prices have retained longtime customers, and new offerings like smoothies and improvements like remodeled stores have attracted the newly budget conscious.

    Analysts will be watching whether McDonald's says anything about menu prices. The company raised prices twice this year — an average of 1 percent in March and an additional 1.4 percent in May — to deal with rising costs for ingredients, thought it may change strategies now that many of those costs have flattened out.

    Analysts will also be watching for signs of the sustainability of McDonald's rapid growth. Though revenue at stores open at least 13 months continues to rise overall, it fell in August in the key market that encompasses Asia/Pacific, the Middle East and Africa. Like many companies in various industries, McDonald's is turning to those fast-growing markets as the U.S. economy stagnates.

    WHY IT MATTERS: Other fast-food chains often copy McDonald's moves, so its decisions can signal what to expect from the rest of the industry. McDonald's global reach means it can provide insight on how people across the world are choosing to spend their money.

    EXPECTATIONS: Analysts expect earnings of $1.43 per share on revenue of $7 billion.

    LAST YEAR: In the same period a year ago, McDonald's recorded earnings of $1.29 per share on revenue of $6.3 billion.
