Economy poised for modest job gains in October

WASHINGTON (AP) — Employers likely added only enough jobs in October to keep the unemployment rate from rising, reflecting their cautious outlook in the sluggish economy.

Economists predict employers added a net total of 100,000 jobs last month, according to a survey by FactSet. That's just enough to keep up with population growth.

More than twice that number is needed to lower the unemployment rate, which is projected to stay at 9.1 percent for the fourth straight month.

Many employers are hesitant to step up hiring until they see steady demand from consumers.

Healthier consumer spending was the key reason the economy expanded at an annual pace of 2.5 percent in the July-September quarter, the best quarterly growth in a year. Growth in consumer spending tripled from the spring, despite renewed recession fears and wide fluctuations in the stock market.

But economists worry that the summer spending gains can't be sustained. For one thing, Americans spent more in the third quarter even though they earned less. And they used their savings to make up the difference.

Without more jobs and higher wages, consumers are likely to pare spending in the months ahead. Consumer spending is important because it accounts for 70 percent of economic activity.

The economy generated an average of 96,000 jobs per month in the third quarter, the same as in the preceding three months. That's down from 166,000 in the first three months of this year.

A raft of data Thursday offered a mixed picture for the economy and hiring.

The number of people applying for unemployment benefits dropped below 400,000 for only the third time this year, the government said. Still, applications would need to fall below 375,000 to signal sustained job gains. They haven't been at that level since February.

Services companies, which employ about 90 percent of the work force, hired more in October after cutting jobs in the previous month, according to a survey by the Institute for Supply Management. Overall growth for the service sector was mostly unchanged from September's slow pace.

Companies ordered more factory goods in September for a third straight month. The gain occurred largely because businesses spent more on industrial machinery, computers and software. It's a sign that in the sluggish economy, many companies are investing in equipment but not in new hires.

Businesses are getting more out their existing work forces while paying less to employ them. Worker productivity rose in the July-September quarter by the most in a year and a half. At the same time, labor costs fell.

Higher productivity is generally a good thing. It can raise standards of living by enabling companies to pay workers more without raising their prices and increasing inflation. But without strong and sustained customer demand, companies are unlikely to hire.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said Wednesday that growth is likely to be "frustratingly slow," after the Fed sharply lowered its economic projections for the next two years.

The Fed now says the economy will likely expand no more than 1.7 percent for all of 2011. That's down from its June forecast of 2.7 percent to 2.9 percent. And it predicted growth of only 2.5 percent to 2.9 percent next year, nearly a percentage point lower than its June estimate.

The Fed said it doesn't expect the unemployment rate to be any lower this year. And it sees unemployment averaging 8.6 percent by the end of next year.

I hope we all realize that most of the jobs created are seasonal in the onset of the Holidays. January's figures will tell the real tale.
      • Henry Juhala 6 mths ago
Figures are already adjusted to reflect seasonal employment.
      • RolfOcale 6 mths ago
Check last years figures they were seasonally adjusted as well as this summers and what it reflected was when the season ended the jobs went south

Most of the jobs created were from smaller businesses and probably were not the best paid. My guess is that you will see more localized efforts to build businesses. Here in Michigan we are seeing an upturn in manufacturing. There are some businesses/manufacturing back from foreign countries. Peoples buying habits are changing.

Stop voting in banker puppets. RP is the only one who is being attacked by the establishment, and that is because he is not a puppet of big finance.
      • Henry Juhala 6 mths ago
Actually it does. But look at the capitalism since Reagan. What has all that done to net out jobs in the presen?. We have a negative job growth situation. The only thing capitalism has done is create jobs overseas and at home redistribute the wealth from the poor to the rich.
      • paul 6 mths ago
The 1% have proven, ever since Reagan was in office, that they do NOT create jobs. They keep all profits for themselves. History PROVES this!

Obama is preventing hundreds of thouands of jobs becoming available by doing whatever he can to stop the building of the pipeline that would carry oil from Canada to the USA. We need the oil. We need the jobs. We can't count on oil from the Mid-East. What's wrong, Obama!?
      • Duncan 6 mths ago
Not that sure about the oil sands. We will be using oil for a while. But we really need to get away from oil in the long run. That pipeline would run a long distance and how long is it good for? Prudhoe Bay in Alaska has been having problems with leakage.
      • Henry Juhala 6 mths ago
What gives you the indication that Obama is preventing the XL pipeline? It is others in opposition to it that are trying to raise it to the level or Presidential politics. But Obama is so far neutral on the issue but will likely sign the bill once the kinks and concerns from the naysayers are addressed and incorporated into the plan where possible.

All this job creation information does not include the fact that many of these new jobs make minimum wage. This is just another example of the Government and Media trying to prime the markets. It is very similar to a person you know who lies all the time and you never believe anymore but he still continues to lie to you.

The amount of jobs added were only enough to keep up with population growth and Bernanke says job growth will be frustratingly slow. Yet the title of the article says, "Economy poised for modest job growth". Typical positive Yahoo spin for Obama. Yahoo sucks with its liberal bias!

You know all the months they say had job gain? The net job gain was negative. We lose more jobs than get created.
    • Steven  •  6 mths ago
The real bricks and mortar world requires the creation of 150,000 to 200,000 jobs a month just to keep up with population growth and maintain the unemployment rate as unchanged.

The constitution was developed to protect and put in control the people of this country. Socialism, progressivism, monarchy, military coups, democracies, communism, etc. are all variations of dictatorial control. This country was created to be a Republic that was of the people, by the people, and for the people. Globalists and opportunists have stolen this country and either ignored or bypassed the constitution to create the big government global monstrosity that exists today. Even in the days of the founding of this country dictorial forms existed and all were studied and dismissed in favor of creating a new/first ever Republic of the People. What Ben Franklin implied is this Republic was ours, if we could keep it...and we didn't. That's what the tea partiers are about, they want it back...it has long been lost. Right wing, left wing, conservative, liberal, Republican, Democrat, etc. are just stereotyping labels to keep the people divided and thus under control.

Of note: Spoken has it right, seasonal low paying jobs are the only increase and it's temporary.

We need to bring all jobs from other countries back home. The people in other countries do not make products as well as American made. We need jobs in the US,not China not Mexico, or else where. We also need to have our own oil, the US has much oil and also natural gas, why do we depend on foreign oil, it is under our feet. The people on the hill need to wake up and listen to the people. I don't know if they know how to tell the truth about anything. I love my country I am sad that they have put us all in this position. No work!!!!!!!
No nothing from them but a bunch of lies and crap!!! People here need help as well. It seems like our country is becoming more and more like socialism.
