EDC approves $184K in renewable energy grants

7 companies get renewable energy fund grants from RI Economic Development Corp.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Island's economic development agency has approved $184,000 in grants through its Renewable Energy Fund.

The board of the Economic Development Corp. approved the funding for seven companies in the first round of awards this year. The grants are for commercial and small-scale solar energy projects.

National Security Corp. is getting $28,000 to install a rooftop solar system on its building in East Providence. Clem's Electric of Bristol is getting $27,000 to install a solar system. Both projects will generate enough energy to cover all of the firms' electricity needs.

The smaller recipients include residential and commercial solar and construction companies in Newport, Providence, Block Island and Attleboro, Mass., as well as a Newport-based nonprofit developer of moderate- and low-income housing.
