Yahoo! News asked North Carolinians for their quick-hit reactions to Thursday's not-guilty verdict in the John Edwards case. Here is one resident's perspective.
COMMENTARY | DURHAM, N.C. -- Politicians get away with just about everything, and the Edwards verdict will only make them more confident they will not get caught.
The idea that John Edwards was an innocent and unknowing bystander in a scheme to collect nearly $1 million from campaign contributors to hide his mistress during his presidential campaign is simply beyond the pale.
I don't only blame the jurors here; I blame a system that barely attempts to enforce campaign finance laws, and even in doing so makes it incredibly difficult to prove those violations.
I am proud to say I did not support Edwards in either of his presidential campaigns. I am disgusted he will get away scot-free here, as there is no way the government will seek a re-trial on the five remaining counts -- it's too expensive and there's little chance of a favorable verdict.
People with money and power usually beat the system. John Edwards did today. How many more corrupt politicians will be emboldened in their shady dealings as a result?
