OYSTER BAY, N.Y. (AP) — FBI divers and New York police have begun lifting a boat that capsized and sank in Long Island Sound, killing three children.
Newsday reports (http://bit.ly/Lfq9pi ) that the air bags used to lift the boat began to break the water's surface at about 12:20 p.m. Wednesday.
The divers went into the 60-degree waters off Oyster Bay Wednesday morning. They secured the vessel with straps that were then attached to inflatable air bags.
Divers tried to raise the boat Tuesday but ran into difficulty in the murky waters 60 feet below the surface.
The 34-foot vessel capsized on July 4 following a fireworks display. There were 27 people on board.
Nassau Detective Lt. John Azzata says examining the vessel is a key component to determining a possible cause for the accident.
