Egypt activists vow no Israeli pilgrimage to tomb

CAIRO (AP) — Egyptian Islamists and other activists vowed Wednesday to prevent Israelis from making an annual pilgrimage to the tomb of a 19th-century Jewish holy man in the Nile Delta.

Pilgrimage opponents have decided to stage protests on roads leading to the tomb of Rabbi Yaakov Abuhatzeira in the village of Daymouta, 180 kilometers (112 miles) north of Cairo, said Gamal Heshmat of the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist group which is the country's best organized political movement.

He said that the late December and early January pilgrimage would be a "suicide mission" for Israelis, because of popular opposition to their presence in Egypt.

"Normalization (of relations) with Israel is forced on the people, and the visits too come against the will of people and despite popular rejection," said Heshmat, who recently won a seat in parliament in the country's first elections following the ouster of former president Hosni Mubarak.

Egyptian activists have rallied against the pilgrimage every year for most of the last decade. Egypt's daily Al-Ahram newspaper reported Tuesday that 31 parties and groups had joined this year's campaign.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Jewish human rights organization based in Los Angeles, denounced the attempts to block the pilgrimage. In a Tuesday statement, the center's Abraham Cooper accused the Brotherhood of trying to "curb religious freedom of Jews."

"In their worldview, there is no respect for the traditions for Jews, dead or alive," he said.

A son to a chief rabbi of Morocco, Abu Hatzeira was revered by some Jews as a mystic renowned for his piety and for performing miracles. The elderly rabbi was making his way from his native Morocco to the Holy Land in 1879 when he fell ill and died in the Egyptian city of Damanhour near Alexandria.

According to tradition, his followers tried to move his tomb three times, and three times heavy storms prevented them.

After Egypt and Israel signed a peace treaty in 1979, Jewish devotees — mostly of Moroccan origin — have traveled annually to the site. But Egypt has limited the numbers of pilgrims.

In 2001 and 2004, two court orders banned the ceremony after opponents filed legal challenges.

Since then, both Delta residents and activist groups have denounced the ceremony. The residents complain of harassment by security forces deployed to protect the pilgrims. Activists oppose the normalization of relations with a country that Egypt fought in four wars between 1948 and 1973, and also see the defiance of the court order as part of the Mubarak regime's general trampling of the rule of law.

In 2009, Egypt officially denied the pilgrims entry because the anniversary fell while Israel was conducing an offensive in Gaza.

A year later, the Israeli press reported that Mubarak accepted a request from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to lift the limits on the number of pilgrims.

The tomb is a vestige of Egypt's once-prosperous Jewish community, which at the time of the first war with Israel in 1948 numbered about 80,000 people.

But the Arab-Israeli wars, and the resentment and expulsions that they engendered, have reduced the number of Egypt's Jews to about 60 individuals, according to the Israeli embassy.

Both the Hamas Charter and the PLO Charter call for the destruction of Israel.
That is destruction, not a Palestinian homeland, not living side-by-side in peace.
      Total and complete annihilation.
How do you discuss peace legitimately with political forces that embrace this ideology?
If all the Palestinian leadership want is to have all the territories back before the 1967 war to establish peace in the region, why then was there no peace there before 1967?
So far, not a single person has been able to answer this.
      • usjustice101 4 mths ago
@Jeff: There is no peace because the palis don't want peace! That is the answer that all the anti-Israel hypocrites and liars are avoiding like the plague!

Obama has spent his political capital by stupidly insisting on a settlements freeze – which he indeed got from Netanyahu, for 10 months, most of which were squandered by trying to persuade Abbas to come and negotiate.
Netanyahu’s settlement freeze was an unprecedented gesture, which achieved nothing because Obama failed to pressure Abbas to make any progress on the core issues (after Abbas did everyone a big favor by just agreeing to negotiate). And yet again the Palestinians places all the blame on the Israeli side…

Jeff, what can you rexpect from a closet muslim. One of the most baffling events of 2008,was the ability of a blowhard to become President of the US. How on earth was the American electorate blinded by his "yes we can" mantra ?.

And I suppose these same people will want to go to the Dome of the Rock, or Al Aqsa Mosque, and do so through Israeli territory.

They talk about respecting all religions and giving free access to the holly sites to all religions, but from 1948 and till June 1967 when Jerusalem and Hebron were in their hands they never let the Jews praying there , on 5/6/67 when IDF first enter Jerusalem they found the Walling wall with garbage and animals excrements around, the Jewish graveyard in olive mountain was desacred many stones were broken intentionly and parts were taken to be used as pavements

Kick all the muslims out, blow up the Dome of the Rock and replace it with the Temple!
      • usjustice101 4 mths ago
@WildBillCody: Funny I just posted basically the same idea before reading your post. Perhaps it's time Israel started doing some banning of its own!
    • Marillion  •  4 mths ago
How would the "friendly, peaceful" Muslims react if Muslims were banned from viviting the Dome of The Rock.

Precedent dictates that they would riot, burn and loot everything in their radius area of effect. Including their own towns and cities.

The Dome of the Rock is NOT in Israel according to THE WORLD. Even if possession is 9/10th of the law, it will be out of Israeli custody as soon as China becomes the world's LONE HYPERPOWER as the US is right where The Birtish Empire was near the end of WW2.
The Rabbi Yaakov Abuhatzeira Tomb IS IN EGYPT according to the WORLD. That makes your analogy completely and utterly useless.

Obama was warned and now that the "The Muslim Brotherhood" have gained control in Egypt ,"Sharia Law" will be the rule of the land, Women's rights and Religious Freedom will no longer exist, and the persecution of its people will be greater than ever. Obama should be proud!

"The tomb is a vestige of Egypt's once-prosperous Jewish community, "

Remove the word "Jewish" and you have a better description of Egypt.
So, do any Egyptians travel to the Al-Aqsa Mosque?

After expelling Jews and taking their property in 1948, Egyptians embarked on yet another war to pillage and rape and kill Israelis. Their army was surrounded in 1973 war and after Kissinger’s mediation and arm twisting, Israelis were forced to let Egyptian army walk free. Soon later, Israel returned Sinai and left oil fields and new constructed resorts of Sharm El Sheikh and others in return for one thing, peace.

As we read in this article, Egyptians never really accepted a new situation and did not abide by the agreement. They continued to discriminate Israelis. Now with the Obama/Hillary supported revolution and a rise of Islamofascists, Egyptian can show their true ugly face again without any shame. Once again they show religious intolerance toward Jews, as they do toward Copts and other Christians, and once again they do not abide by business agreements signed to sell natural gas to Israel, they attack Israelis and now go as far as religious cleansing, prevention of religious pilgrimage and more. Imagine if it was done to them. The whole world would be screaming foul and Egyptian Muslims would harbor hate for millenniums. Still, even though they are treated nicely, it doesn’t stop them from hating forever, no matter what. None of those Egyptians probably saw one Israeli or Jew in his life, or has a personal reason to hate. Obviously it is a religion based hate. A peaceful religion? You be the judge..
    • usjustice101  •  4 mths ago
More proof of apartheidism and hate for anything not islamic from the "religion of peace".
Meanwhile, back at the ranch in Oklahoma, idiotic judges strike down a new state law banning the use if Sharia law. How STUPID can they be??

If Israel were to do the same with a Muslim Holy site, the whole Arab World would invade in a heart beat and the UN General Assembly would most likely would support such an attack!
    • usjustice101  •  4 mths ago
Islam is as Islam does! Full of hatred and contempt for everyone and everything else not islamic!
If Israel were to bar all Egyptians traveling to any Islamic sites in the West bank, or anywhere else in Israel, the whole WORLD would be crying foul!

No Christians or jews will be visiting Egypt, with the way Christians and Jews have been treated in their county. I can wait to see the fall of their tourism trade. I certainly won't be spending any money in Egypt in the near future. Maybe when respect is shown for all religions in Egypt, will their tourism trade be renewed. Egypt is on the way down, to a typical ugly, Islamic state with no joy or happiness.
