Egypt PM dissolves soccer federation board

CAIRO (AP) — Egypt's prime minister has dissolved the Egyptian Soccer Federation's board and referred its members for questioning by prosecutors after post-match clashes that left 74 dead.

Prime Minister Kamal el-Ganzouri announced the decision during Thursday's emergency parliamentary session, a day after a match between Al-Ahly and Al-Masry soccer teams in the Mediterranean city of Port Said turned deadly.

El-Ganzouri also says the governor of Port Said province and the area's police chief have resigned.

Witnesses had said that riot police stood by as supporters of home team Al-Masry rushed the field after their 3-1 win over Al-Ahly.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

CAIRO (AP) — Scores of Egyptian soccer fans were crushed to death while others were fatally stabbed or suffocated after being trapped in a long narrow corridor trying to flee rival fans armed with knives, clubs and stones, in the country's worst ever soccer violence that killed at least 74 people, witnesses and health officials said Thursday.

The tragedy Wednesday evening — which followed an Egyptian league match between Al-Masry, the home team in the Mediterranean city of Port Said, and Al-Ahly, based in Cairo and one of Egypt's most popular teams — was a bloody reminder of deteriorating security in the Arab world's most populous country, as instability continues nearly a year after former President Hosni Mubarak was swept out of power in a popular uprising.

It was also the deadliest soccer violence worldwide since 1996. One player said it was "like a war."

Egyptian activists have accused the police and military of failing to intervene to stop the mayhem.

On Thursday morning, dozens of angry protesters sealed off Tahrir Square, the epicenter of the uprising that toppled Mubarak, while others blocked the street in front of the state TV building in downtown Cairo ahead of planned marches later in the day to the Interior Ministry to denounce the police force.

The melee at the stadium in Port Said erupted when Al-Masry fans stormed the field following a rare 3-1 win against Al-Ahly. Al-Masry supporters, armed with knives, sticks and stones, chased players and fans from the rival team, Al-Ahly, who ran toward the exits and up the stands to escape, according to witnesses.

Ahmed Ghaffar, one of the visiting Al Ahly fans at the stadium, said "layers of people" were stuck, "suffocating inside a narrow corridor" as they tried to get out of the stadium

"The people were stuck over each other because there was no other exist," Ghaffar tweeted on Thursday. "We were between two choices, either death coming from behind us, or the closed doors."

Ghaffar said that seconds after the match ended, Al-Masry fans rushed onto the pitch from all sides while the police stood by motionless. A power outage followed, he said, and "the soccer field fell into darkness."

"We were surprised the the police let them in that easy. The numbers were huge," he said.

As many Al-Ahly fans crowded into the corridor leading out of the stadium, they were trapped, with the doors at the other end locked.

Ghaffar said Al-Masry fans beat those Al-Ahly fans who fell on the floor and also described several stampedes.

Al-Masry fan, Mohammed Mosleh, posted his account on Facebook, saying he saw "thugs with weapons" on his side in the stadium where police presence was meager.

"This was unbelievable," he said. "We were supposed to be celebrating, not killing people. We defeated Al-Ahly, something I saw twice only in my lifetime. All the people were happy. Nobody expected this."

Health ministry official Hisham Sheha said deaths were caused by stabs by sharp tools, brain hemorrhage and concussions. "All those carried to hospitals were already dead bodies," Sheha told state-TV.

One man told state TV he heard gunshots in the stadium, while a lawmaker from Egypt's powerful Muslim Brotherhood said the police didn't prevent fans carrying knives from entering the stadium.

TV footage showed Al-Ahly players rushing for their locker room as fistfights broke out among the hundreds of fans swarming on to the field. Some men had to rescue a manager from the losing team as he was being beaten. Black-clothed police officers stood by, appearing overwhelmed.

The Interior Ministry said 74 people died, including one police officer, and 248 were injured, 14 of them police. A local health official initially said 1,000 people were injured and it was not clear how severely. Security forces arrested 47 people for involvement in the violence, the statement said.

State TV appealed to Egyptians to donate blood for the injured in Port Said, and the military sent two aircraft to evacuate serious cases to the capital, Cairo.

A number of political parties called on the Egyptian parliament to pass no-confidence vote against the government of Kamal el-Ganzouri, a Mubarak-era politician appointed by the much-critized ruling military council. El-Ganzouri himself held an emergency cabinet meeting early Thursday.

Essam el-Erian, a Brotherhood lawmaker, said the military and police were complicit in the violence, accusing them of trying to show that emergency regulations giving security forces wide-ranging powers must be maintained.

"This tragedy is a result of intentional reluctance by the military and the police," he said.

The trigger for the violence, however, remains a mystery since most of the attackers were from the winning team.

April 6 group, which was among youth groups that led the anti-Mubarak uprising, accused the ruling military of collaboration in the violence.

"Is it logical that the force that managed to secure parliamentary elections in nine provinces can't secure a soccer match where skirmishes among fans were expected," the group said in a statement Thursday.

The organized soccer fans known as Ultras have playing an important role in the anti-Mubarak uprising and rallies against the military rule. Their anti-police songs, peppered with curses, have quickly become viral and an expression of the hatred many Egyptians feel toward security forces that were accused of much of the abuse that was widespread under Mubarak's regime.

In the eyes of political activists, the long enmity between Ultras and much-hated security forces under Mubarak and under the military rule explains why the police stepped aside in the face of deadly brawl.

In a statement signed by Ultras of Al-Ahly, the group said Thursday that the military council and former members of Mubarak's regime were retaliating for the Ultras role in the revolution.

"They want to punish us and execute us for our participation in the revolution against suppression," it said, and vowed a "new war in defense of our revolution."

It's all part of sports, muslim style. Besides dissolving the soccer federation only gives the Muslim Brotherhood the means, and time, to build the gallows, chopping blocks, whipping posts, and other devices necessary for the future soccer stadium entertainment. They are in close contact with the Afghan Taliban get pointers.

This is getting interesting.... reads more.... Italian police admit Liverpool fans were targeted by 'Ultras' after series of attacks in Naples
      By Nick Pisa In Rome
      21st October 2010

Italian police have admitted gangs of Napoli's hardcore 'Ultra' fans went out hunting Liverpool supporters to attack in the city.
Italian police and British consular staff in the crime-ridden southern port city said there had been a series of fights during the night.
In the most serious attack a 53-year-old man from Liverpool and a 27-year-old man from Blackpool suffered knife wounds after being slashed across the buttocks and upper thighs.
Buttock slashing is common in clashes with Italy's notorious 'Ultras' as it is not life threatening but painful and embarrassing for the victim.

Reads more....The Ultras was first established in Italy by a group of workers to denounce the commercialization of football in the 1950s. As ticket prices increased by football clubs to selectively eliminate the presence of a certain demographic of people, fans retaliated by selecting the worst seats in the stadium behind the goalkeeper to maintain their presence at the games and thus, a social movement and cause was born.

Reads more....The Ultras White Knights: Football hooliganism or social movement?

The current number of Ultras members is estimated at 30,000 across Egypt.
By Heba Elkayal / Daily News Egypt September 16, 2011, 6:02 pm
CAIRO: If the first rule of Fight Club is to not talk about Fight Club, the same is to be said of the Ultras White Knights. Maintaining secrecy about the group’s order and activities is second only to their first rule of football above all. Though the fictional movie "Fight Club" was about a group of men who held intense game fights secretly, the Ultras as a general movement share a similar spirit of camaraderie and brotherhood for a collective common cause: the pure enjoyment of football games.
The Ultras as a general movement aims to support football teams. Each chapter of the Ultras supports its favored team by attending all games both home and away, dedicating their time, effort and personal money to funding their support for the team.
Beshir is currently writing a book on the history of the Ultras. Both his journalistic and personal activities are directed towards the support of the White Knights, even when their activities take a slightly political tone.

As news broke out about the altercations between football fans and central security forces at a football match between Ahly Club and Kima Aswan on Sept. 6, it was made clear by both media and Twitter users that this was an altercation between the Ahly Ultras and not Zamalek Ultras White Knights. It then became publicly clear that the term “Ultras” has become not only a household term, but that the public now recognizes the formation and activities of this social group. In addition, questions were raised about why the fight took place, and what the Ultras as a movement aim to do.

Reads another article....: Zamalek fans to protest Thursday as Degla-riots case delayed
As their members face military trials for alleged rioting, Zamalek's hardcore Ultras White Knights (UWK) to protest on Thursday as the case was delayed
Eslam Omar, Monday 8 Aug 2011

The Military trail has again delayed Monday the case of the 18 Zamalek fans detained during Degla match hooliganism to next Thursday.
Tens of Zamalek hardcore fans, Ultras White Knights (UWK) protested in front of the military court in Nasr City Monday morning to support their fellow fans as they did last Thursday.
Eighteen members of the UWK were arrested during for riots during the 1-1 Wadi Degla draw on 7 July when the Whites lost their bid for their first Egyptian Premier League title since 2004.
“Brothers in blood, It’s time to apply our slogan,” the UWK Facebook page stated in a note calling for the protest.
When the military prosecution decided to release the 18 Zamalek supporters on LE3,000 bail each, the UWK collected the funds quickly through a campaign endorsed by writer and TV host, Omar Taher.
The scene of hooliganism featured angry fans hurling stones and bottles at policemen, two of whom were injured as clashes continued outside the stadium amid growing tensions in domestic football.
Zamalek finished second this season after archrivals Ahly, who claimed their seventh successive title.

Reads an old article....Ahly's Ultras vow to attend Ismaily match despite govt ban
Ahly fans blast Egyptian Football Association as controlled 'by remnants of Mubarak regime'; say they have the right to cheer for their team
      Eslam Omar Ahram Online : 06 - 12 - 2011

Hardcore Ahly fans, the Ultras Ahlawy, declared their insistence on attending the anticipated clash with Ismaily on day 7 of the Egyptian Premier League – in spite of the Egyptian Football Association (EFA)'s decision to punish the team for recent fan riots by making it play behind closed doors.
“We confirmed during the Dakhliya game that we are going to attend the Ismaily match. And we will attend,” reads a statement by theUltras Ahlawy-UA07Facebook page, which boasts more than 255,000 members.
The fans emphasized that they wanted to deliver a message to “all remnants of the ousted regime” that they would not obey their “manipulated regime.”
“It's obvious that this association [the EFA], which is controlled by remnants of the former regime, is biased in applying the regulations. There is no reason to punish the spectators. We didn't ruin any stadiums or riot against anybody,” the Ultras stated.
The EFA board of directors under Chairman Samir Zaher, who was elected during the Mubarak era, has vowed to punish anyone who sets off fireworks or uses bad language in the stands.
“We'll say it again: We, Ultras Ahlawy, will attend the match because the punishment is illegal – and we call on all Ahly supporters to come too,” the Ultras declared.
“We're going to attend in order to support our beloved team, not to riot. So we ask officials of the corrupt regime to revise their decision. All they do is work for their personal interests and steal the clubs' money,” the controversial group added.
The newfound interest in politics among football fans was first sparked by Egypt's 18-day uprising in January that culminated in Mubarak's ouster. During the uprising, Ahly and Zamalek fans – the Ultras Ahlawy and the White Knights – played a major role in defending Tahrir Square revolutionaries from the depredations of government-hired thugs.
“The issue is bigger than football. We want to settle the score with remnants of the former regime, under the leadership of Samir Zaher, and their oppression of Egyptian youth,” the Ultras' statement concluded.
The EFA is expected to respond to the issue soon as security in the country remains unstable since the 28 January collapse of the interior ministry, which is also deeply unpopular among many football supporters.
Ahly's win over Kima Aswan in a low-key Egypt Cup game in September turned sour towards the final whistle when hundreds of fans were involved in clashes with security personnel, who continued to chase the die-hard supporters outside Cairo Stadium and beat a number of them.
The Red Devilsare currently first in the league table with 14 points, 4 before archrivals Zamalek who are in fifth place.
