    Egypt Votes In Landmark Election

Last night in Cairo, voters were tense ahead of the first round of Egypt’s long-awaited parliamentary elections. Hundreds of protesters huddled in the rain between Cairo’s Parliament and Cabinet building, part of a three-day-old gathering that could be considered the radical little sister of the ongoing demonstration in Tahrir Square. Just as the violent standoff between Tahrir protesters and the military started to ease over the weekend, the amoeba group had spread to the new location, resulting in another brief flurry of violence and one protester dead after being run over by an army truck. The demonstrators had effectively blocked the entrance to the newly-appointed prime minister’s office, chanting, “The Stupid say: Elections!”

But when asked individually, protesters all said they planned to go to the polls. “Of course I’m voting. All the people here are going to vote,” said Rania Gaber, a 23-year-old employee at Vodafone. Her friends echoed her sentiment. They said that while they weren’t optimistic about the elections—“the elections are a trick,” said one—they’d fill out a ballot all the same. “The election is a dead end, but we don’t have any other choice,” said another of Gaber’s friends.

As massive, bloody anti-military protests have flared up in Egypt over the past two weeks, many onlookers and Egyptians themselves have wondered gloomily whether the elections would even take place. The country has a long history of election-day violence, and this time around, some sort of disaster seemed almost inevitable. Some Egyptians suspected that the ruling military council would use the Tahrir protests as an excuse to delay the vote. Others foresaw bloodshed between supporters of rival political parties. All in all, the forecast was grim.

But Monday dawned warm and sunny in Cairo, and Egypt’s mood seems to have miraculously cleared up as well. In Maadi, an upscale neighborhood of the capital, traffic was brought to a complete standstill as voters flocked to the polls. At Kawmia primary school, a polling station for women (who vote in separate locations from men), two seemingly endless queues stretched down the block, packing the street and making it look like a mini-demonstration in itself. “Beautiful! Beautiful!” mused Omar Kandeel, a volunteer elections monitor for the Muslim Brotherhood, the main Islamist party in Egypt that was banned under Hosni Mubarak’s three-decade rule and that stands to see big electoral gains. A few nights earlier, Kandeel had been in Tahrir Square, covered in tear gas residue as the violence reached its peak. Now, he pulled out his iPhone to record the turnout as he waded through the crowd. “Excellente!”

Reports from other neighborhoods in Cairo and from Alexandria and Port Said also reflected a huge, peaceful turnout. Voters have been jubilantly tweeting pictures of the long lines under the hashtags #egyelections and #egypt and marveling at the lack of discord. One voter tweeted, “Coptic lady next to me takes one look at two burly bearded guys and says ‘here come the troublemakers.’ They give her a chair. ‘Oh.’” Others reported waiting six hours in line, and recorded falafel vendors taking full advantage of the big crowds.

Besem Fathy, an activist monitoring the elections for an NGO, was stuck in an office all morning filtering crowd-sourcing feeds. The setbacks he described were minimal: “The main problems are late openings of polling stations,” he said, and ballots without official government stamps. Leslie Campbell, the Middle East regional director of the National Democratic Institute, was in Cairo with a big group of associates to observe the elections. He also ticked off nuisances like late openings and ballots being late to arrive, but he said these problems didn’t seem to be happening out of malfeasance but rather bad preparation. “When you combine that with the level of excitement,” there are going to be some long lines, he said. “The election has clearly captured people’s attention.”

Amal Himdan, a founding member of the newly-created Hadara Party, which is monitoring elections with the Muslim Brotherhood, was equally pleased with the proceedings. “It’s going remarkably well,” he said. “The turnout is above all calculations and expectations, and we think that in itself will help the stability of the elections and the confidence of the people. Thus far it seems to be a very positive day.”

In Tahrir, protesters were reportedly taking shifts so some could go out and vote while others stayed in place to occupy the square.

Back at the Kawmia primary school, Yasmine Samir, a 25-year-old teaching assistant who had been waiting in line 90 minutes and still had hours ahead of her, said she remained cautious about the country’s future. She’d been in Tahrir last week protesting against the military council. Still, she was excited to vote. “The people who died during the revolution died in order for us to be here today,” she said. “Even if it doesn’t work, it’s a step.”

Egyptians are committing genocide against Coptic Christians. Stop all US aid to Egypt.

Thanks tro Obama's Cairo speech, Egypt is going from a US ally to fanatic moslem rule.

The Middle East will never be a Democracy with Islam in power. See, a Democracy requires that you accept all race and religion, which Islam fails to do.

Hello Egypt, and welcome to the Dark Ages.

Let them VOTE for what they WANT.... If it ends up Sharia, then so be it

What Muslims call “tolerance,” others correctly identify as institutionalized discrimination. The consignment of Jews and Christians to dhimmis under Islamic rule means that they are not allowed the same religious rights and freedoms as Muslims.

So many negative comments about the possibilitty of an islamic govt....Look at early Islamic history, there an many examples of excellant islamic govts....In the US youve got Bush (christian) invading Iraq without cause and killing 100's of thousands....who is the US to preach to anyone about what kind of govt they choose.

Let the Egyptians decide what they feel is the best for them...If its an Islamic style govt, so be it. Our secular democracy invaded Iraq without cause and killed 100's of thousands...and so many seem to think Egypt will end up worse? plzzz

This is the New Egypt. This is Arab Spring.

When Muslims are given the right to vote, they don't vote for equal treatment under the law for everyone. Only for Muslims.

A democracy is a system in which all people are judged as equals before the law, regardless of race, religion or gender. The vote of every individual counts as much as the vote of any other. The collective will of the people then determines the rules of society.

What these Egyptians are now voting for is a Islamic Sharia run country This Islamic state will guided by Islamic law, derived from the Quran and Sunnah. A body of clerics interprets the law and applies it to all circumstances social, cultural and political. The people are never to be placed above the Quran and Sunnah any more than man should be above Allah.

Under Islamic law, only Muslim males are entitled to full rights. The standing of a woman is often half that of a man's - sometimes even less. Non-Muslims have no standing with a Muslim.

The purpose is to deprive non-Muslims (ie. Christians ) of equal treatment before the law.

This is Arab Spring in reality.

The type of misery that the fraud of Islam has visited on Muslims and the Islamic lands is a rapidly spreading plague that must be resisted by all who cherish their God-given liberty

      @ Adam

That's just a lie and a lousy attempt to hide the truth of the murder, torture, abuse, rape of Christians and burning down of Churches in Egypt. More than 200 Christians have been murder by Muslims for trying to protect the property and families

obuma was well aware of the muslim brotherhood taking over the elections. "Amal Himdan, a founding member of the newly-created Hadara Party, which is monitoring elections with the Muslim Brotherhood, was equally pleased with the proceedings." Soon, sharia law will overtake any democratic laws of the land. Then comes Libya, Bahrain, and next Syria. Saudi Arabia will be the last and obuma's mission will be complete. Come on American leftnuts, how can you NOT see through this liar in chief?

Voting, appeasement for the people, while the powers that be select whom they want to be their puppet for the term. Kind of like America. WE don't get to see the tallies of votes being done. WE just hear who won. WE go and punch little holes in ballots and put them in a locked garbage box, to be taken to who knows where until congress formulates their lies under the guise of the electoral college. THEN! one fine morning... they announce an uneducated dunce, president of our country. Oh.. and people take it, AND believe it. I want to SEE these votes tallied, I want cameras, lights, action! I want to see all these ballots counted.

In pretending that these revolutions in the Middle East are a force for liberation, our political leaders are either indulging in wishful thinking or retreating into cowardice.

The West has to wake up to the realities of what is happening in the region.

Far from paving the way for freedom and pluralism, the uprisings have led only to more intolerance, authoritarianism and division against non-Muslims.

All of this is bad news for Egypt’s Coptic Christian minority, which makes up around ten per cent of the population.

In recent months, they have suffered appallingly from a brutal pincer movement made up of the military on one side and the Islamists on the other.

Massacres, individual beatings, and the desecration of churches are all characteristic of this savagery.

Where are the headline stories in Yahoo regarding this Crime against Humanity? Where is the UN?
      • ub 6 mths ago
It is so sad, but true. Most of the violence against the Copts goes unreported and it is largely downplayed in the media. Where are the real journalists? Where is the U.N?
      • Adam F 6 mths ago
All Egyptians are COPTS! most are muslims however. What about the genocide in Iraq comitted by Christians (Bush Cheney and Rumsfeld) There is actually not a real problem in Egypt...i Know im there!

I hope it works out for them and that they choose democracy and fairness and equality.
I am puzzled on how a nation 10 to 15 times older than the USA has still not yet got it right. How many ignorant foul ups and retreats and mistakes and detours can one people make? Are Egyptians just naturally stupid or what? Maybe it is their crap religion that is holding them back, I just don't know. Anyway good luck to them.

Well , you have to read about Egypt and find out why it took the Egyptians all that long time to find the right path. by the way also read about islamic impire and muslims in spain. good luck
