El Paso woman is first cross-border bullets victim

EL PASO, Texas (AP) — A woman has become the first victim of bullets flying across the border from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, into El Paso, Texas.

Authorities say the 48-year-old woman was hit on the calf by an assault rifle-type bullet while shopping in a busy street downtown. The wound was not life-threatening.

El Paso's mayor asked Tuesday for residents to be calm as there is "no way to prevent incidents like this from happening." He says the odds of getting hit by a stray bullet are minimal.

At the same time the woman was struck, Juarez police and alleged carjackers exchanged about 50 shots near the border. Three El Paso schools were put on lockdown.

Since drug-related violence in Juarez spiked in 2008, bullets have struck El Paso buildings but never a person.

Ugh, I am so sick of the misinformation our own media continues to spread about this nonsense... Have any of you actually read where the guns in Mexico come from? A lot of the firearms that the violence is stemming from are actually weapons sold from the Corrupt Mexican Military into the hands of the Drug cartels. Sure there may be some firearms that came from America through you guessed it illegal arms sales taking place from Felon selling to illegal. Pay attention America, your so quick to write off your rights and are convinced they are outdated. But imagine if the Citizens of Mexico were able to band together and fight back against the drug cartels. They might actually fear the citizens. Bottom line here is you, disarm any populace and any crime syndicate that wants to move in and overwhelm a police force and terrorize the citizens is free to do so. Point and case? MEXICO...

The Mexican Army and MArines uses H&K and the FX-05. They would never use fake AK-47, Ar-15 or the Fake crappy semi autos found in US shops, those guns suck. So no the criminals don't get the weapons from The Mexican Army. THANK YOU!

I know what I'm going to say will be viewed as less than PC but it is what it is. Other than the fact I'm glad the victim in this story will be okay...who cares? Why would I say that? Because the Mexican citizens don't care...over 10 million of them illegally chose to move into the U.S. and Canada instead of fighting for their rights and their country. They obviously don't care because the "vida es muy bueno" so why go back. They are perfectly content to move into U.S. communties and neighborhoods and start all over again while demanding their rights as citizens...instead of demanding their government do something about the widespread violence enveloping/destabilizing their nation. Over the years we've watched China, Russia, Libya, Yemen, Syria, Central, South America and other places erupt in violence as their people DEMANDED a new station in life, demanded and fought for the return of civil liberty and democracy. But not in Mexico. Everyone just packs up and moves to Texas, Georgia, Florida, California, Tennesse, Alaska, and other states instead of staying put and running the drug lords right out of Mexico...and no one finds that strange or odd. So I don't care because they obviously don't..but I'll tell all of you this. There is a war going on just below our southern border...American citizens have been kidnapped, killed, and threatened because of it and everyone just looks the other way. You need to wake up and here's why. If the Mexican citizens don't care about or are not equipped to make a change in their government...who do you think will be responsible for that if the situation in Mexico deteriorates to the point of no return? That would be us....

if this was happening in the united states you would not be making jokes about it or think it so funny they are human beings made by GOD just like you and me and your mom amd your son or brother etc. etc

It did happen in the US. That is what the article is about. It's not about American criminals shooting a Mexican in Mexico, while in a shoot out with El Paso police. READ THE ARTICLE!

Not nearly as bad as the thousands who die as a result of cross-border narcotics...

      This is all Obama's fault

His Gov allowed for not one but many shipments of arms to Mexico for covert operations. And guess were they are crossing from? El Paso
      • Ronin 3 mths ago
@FS...OUTSTANDING! Nothing like reporting information that is taken out of context and blamed on the guy in charge. Let's do this...how about putting the responsibility for this mess squarely on the shoulders of those responsible the Mexican government. To this day Mexican society is based on castes and other social conditions that have led to nothing but poverty for a majority of mexican citizens while others have become more and more rich/corrupt. Just ask them because we know there are about 7-12 million mexican immigrants living in the United States that have no business being here other than the fact they would starve to death in their own country. Why is that? Because despite every program the U.S. implemented to help Mexico stand on its own two feet it has failed to thrive and has chosen to become a major narco state. Now it could be argued that if there was no taste for drugs in the U.S. then there would be no drug wars. But I say if there were good honest jobs in Mexico the people would not have to sell drugs...so not only do I hold the Mexican government responsible for killing it's own citizens, I also hold the same government responsible for its corruption, the killing of U.S. Border agents, and the increase in crime in my community because of the sudden influx of mexican criminals fighting their petty wars on American soil. I also hold each and every mexican citizen living in the United States responsible for this mess because they lack the courage to go home and take their country back. Now...how you like them apples?

And Obama is in deep denial of border problems.
      • Ronin 3 mths ago
@ Greg...won't argue with your flawed logic. But Pres Obama has shipped more illegal immigrants home than any other past president. Now answer me this....if everyone is in such deep denial why were heavy armor units reallocated to the border...You are aware that regular surveillance missions are flown in border regions on a regular basis...right? But of course this must be fiction because of the deep denial thing.

"El Paso's mayor asked for residents to be calm as there is "no way to prevent incidents like this from happening." He says the odds of getting hit by a stray bullet are minimal"

Oh hell no !!! Bring in the US military and return fire. Then Mexico will get the message and police its border.

Your right, nothing will be done, till the American government does something about it.
      • Cecilia 3 mths ago
I say have the mayor of El Paso and his entire family live in a tent right at the border and if he and his family members survive one of those minimal chances then he can continue with his liberal rhetoric. I guarantee you the mayor of El Paso lives in a gated community in the northern part of town, just as far away as possible from the border.

This is not --repeat not--the first cross border shooting. We have had US federal officers killed by cross border gun fire recently. Less recently, in 1916, President Wilson ordered the entire US Nat'l Guard to the border to chase Mexicans back home. Black Jack Pershing was in charge. There was plenty of cross border gun fire then, for sure.

Even if the child had been hit and and then died, we would all still just sit at our computers making comments and saying "oh no that's horrible" instead of heading down to Texas and defending our own borders since our federal government refuses to even allow the individual states to do so. Americans are sheep, controlled by washington, which is controlled by big business. For this message in spanish, press numero uno.

If that bullet came over the border - isn't that justification for a declaration of war? Where is Bush jr when you need him? This is Texas and I know lot of peeps have guns ready to shoot each other in this fine state- come on lets get our shootin on, next thing you know all their citizens will be crossing the boarder!

I have not been to any part of Mexico in 5 years. The last time I was there we visited the Parian (Mercado for those of you that don’t know the real name to it), and some of the shops were already boarded up and even some of the stores in El Centro (downtown). Mexico has always had economic problems due to the fact that Mexico is not really a Democracy, the elite rule by a system that is more colonial/dictorship than anything. Democracy is something that they like to pretend to have for its neighbors in the North. Yet, their problems got completely out of control when their government agreed to their version of NAFTA with Central America (which was already as corrupt as Mexico is now). It is called Central America Free Trade Agreement which took effect in 2001.. The agreement has a Spanish name and I might not remember its exact name in Spanish. Anyway, Mexico’s problems escalated in a way similar to what America is experiencing today only more exponentially. They had illegal alien problems similar to ours and their government did exactly what Obama is currently doing. Their actions of their own government whether intentionally by crooked politicians or unintentionally by misguided ones gave way to the drug Cartels and the already crooked cops who later joined the drug cartels way into every area of Mexico’s government and leadership. Now, it is going to take literally for its own citizens to rise up and start a civil war against these drug cartels and whether we like it or not we are most likely going to have to get involved. Going back to the agreement, you have to realize that when they agreed to the Central America Free Trade Agreement, Central America was already as corrupt as Mexico is today with the drug cartels so in essence it was like signing a deal with the devil and now they are reaping what they sowed. Well, guess what, we did a similar thing with the NAFTA, only we have a republic/democracy and that actually slowed down the drug cartels, but now with this weak or actually enabling president the drug cartels are getting more and more brazen. Terrorist like Alcadia and the Muslim brotherhood were among some who actually trained the drug cartels in Central America and of course the U.S. did some of that too. Stray bullets coming from across the border and actual attacks on near our seashores are only the beginning, but this president is either an idiot in denial or just in on it. I’m inclined to believe the latter.

Let's plan our vacations in El Paso - sounds like loads of fun! Oh and where can I sign up to participate in the "bullets without borders" program?
    • Strand  •  3 mths ago
Really? Are you kidding me?!! No way to stop these isolated incidences? Oh, I think there is. It's called the American Military.... Walk away from Afghanistan, its a looser anyway and then tell Mexico that for at least 5 miles inside its border that we will patrol and fire on anyone who's holding a rifle. Drop leaflets there, give them a sizable heads up and then fire without regard. And then,in concert with Mexican authorities,we send in seal team six to extract or Kill any member of any clan associated with the cartels. Our constitution states, foreign or domestic. Well, it's time to protect OUR citizens and borders from these animals bringing in the drugs and firing into the US. This should not to be used to prevent those from coming in....as that's a different issue and impossible to get your hands around. But the drug war. Let's float a few drones over these areas and drop missiles. This is by far a GREATER threat to American that the Taliban. 2900 died in New York, Tens of thousands of Americans each year die or their families are destroyed in some fashion from these cartels. Its TIME people, its TIME! I hate to quote George Bush but in this instance, its appropriate. You are either with us or against us and that message needs to be sent to Mexican authorities. They'll get in line I am sure.
