Re-Election for President Obama Should Not Hinge on Gas Prices

COMMENTARY | Politics in America have an unusual knack for turning in circles, or at least cycles. In 2008, record gas prices led one presidential hopeful to push a renewable energy platform that helped him get elected, as reported by the Washington Post. Of course, as anyone who regularly fills up a vehicle at the gas pump knows already, gas prices are expensive yet again, and as The Christian Science Monitor reports, probably headed higher.

The thought that the outcome of President Barack Obama's re-election hopes could hinge on one of the factors that ultimately brought him the White House in the first place is a great example of the cyclical nature of the world. Sure, President Obama and the Democrats will do everything in their power to play down the impact of higher fuel prices and the Republicans will do everything in their power to publicize the skyrocketing price of fuel.

The AP report mentions that the U.S. government, the president included, does not have any way of controlling gas prices. A lot of external factors come into play that increase or decrease the prices Americans, and the world, pay at the pump.

Politics and policy go hand in hand, and even if some candidate had a magic plan that would bring gas prices into the $2 arena, many voters would probably find it difficult to believe. Encouraging drilling and refining in the United States is all fine and good, but even the best laid energy policy would have difficulty staying relevant if a conflict crept up that affected oil supplies.

When it comes to gas prices, if there were a way to bring the prices down to less than a dollar per gallon, it would have been done already, because that is how elections are won and political careers are built. However, deciding who to vote for solely because the price of gas is $ or $5 per gallon seems a bit short-sighted, because there are plenty of other reasons to endorse or not endorse a political candidate. Most of those reasons are not the ones the other guy is trying to point out.

Then what do we judge him on? Well how about 9% unemployment.
      • Real American 3 mths ago
The 9% is only after they manipulate the stats. The real number is double that, if you include folks underemployed or who just stopped looking.

It should hinge on his incompetence and arrogance. Either one would work.

Iran faces a delicate issue. On the one hand it wants to show the world all it’s got and put it at ease, while on the other hand it fears that such show 'n tell will give its enemies a roadmap to bomb it.
Saddam Hussein faced a similar dilemma ten years ago. Though he wanted the world to know he had nothing to hide, he also wanted to bluff his archenemy Iran into believing Iraq still had WMD.
Bluffing did not go well for Saddam, and it might not go well for Ahmadinejad.
But since the price tag for ridding Saddam proved high, maybe we ought to reflect what we are asking of Iran now. On the eve of a threatened attack, we are asking it to take us to the depths of its arsenal and show us all it's got.
Such great expectations are a sign we have been talking to our friends too long and are in need of a broader perspective. Exactly when was the last time we asked Pakistan, India, China or Russia to show us their arsenal?
“But those countries are not advocating the destruction of Israel.”
True, but Israel is not a thorn on their side either.
Surely, however, we can see beyond the hyperboles and figure out their underlying purpose. Or have we forgotten that not all Iranians are thrilled with Ahmadinejad?
      He sure hasn’t forgotten.
Nor has he forgotten that that his countrymen hate Israel even more. So he tells them that Israel will be wiped from the face of the earth. Expectantly, this nonsense unites them against a common enemy. It is even a diversion from the misery and isolation brought on by his theocratic regime.
Quite clever work by Ahmadinejad -- and not a rial spent or a bullet fired.
So why are we letting the crazy talk about destroying Israel get us all worked-up -- to the point of turning the world topsy-turvy again.
Can we not see the desperate attempts of an unpopular regime simply trying to hold on?

The writer is right.....we shouldn't look at gas prices as a reason whether to endorse or not endorse Obama.

Obama is a Marxist. See, there is a good reason not to endorse Obama.
    • KevinH  •  3 mths ago
That's funny...an OBAMA supporter asking that America just goes down quietly like a sheep to slaughter...poor little pwesidant; it's not his fault! Don't worry Dude, Gas prices are the least of the reasons that this Marxist, anti American bum will be voted out of office!

Obama does not deserve a 2nd term and come to think of it, he never deserved a 1st term.
      • AndyJr. 3 mths ago
He deserves it much more than those cartoon characters that are running as Repubs.
      • Mutley 3 mths ago
@andy jr.......are you sure you are not Mooooooooochelle Obama?
      • Raymond 3 mths ago
Yea man if we could just have kept Bush Cheney in there for a few more years we could have made it to bankruptcy and killed 50 million more people and all of us broke peons would be subjugated to their corporate masters. That would be fun wouldn't it. You have a president that puts the interest of American citizens above that of greedy corporations. The Republican Party hates him for it. He is for your best interest but as of now you seem to be against your self. Have the death panels come to get your granny yet?

Candidate Obama said President Bush was responsable for high gas prices in 2008. At some point President Obama needs to take responsablity.
      • Robert G. Ingersoll 3 mths ago
        @Matthew

You are telling a lie! Candidate Obama never said such a thing at all.

I remember $5.47 gas in the summer of 2008 and it was not the fault of
President Bush anymore than gas prices today are the fault of President Obama.

You need to tell the Iranians to stop making threats and also tell the Chinese, Indians, and Brazilians to stop buying tens of millions of new cars and having the nerve to want to put gas in them.

Some people here obviously get their news from fox. Do some fact checking this administration has probably issued more permits than the previous one. In addition there are over 75 million acres the oil companies could be drilling on. I don't think Obama accused Bush as being at fault; however I know Bush/Cheney and the Republican Party are responsible. After years of Republicans crying for deregulation they eventually bribed or blackmailed or decieved a few democrats to get the oil industry deregulated. Within a couple years gas prices went from near$1 to $5 oil company profits more than quadrupled. Instead of a couple billion a year they now profit 150 billion a year and I might add that it has come at our expense and that of our economy. Drilling is not the solution, the oil companies will just export the oil to where they get the most money for it as they already do with billions of dollars worth of dometic oil every month. The only solution is windfall profits tax or reregulation and that wont happen with this congress. The oil companies are one of the corporate masters of the Republican Party. If they can make a few billion extra profit and hurt Obama it would be a double wammy for them and YOU lose.

Gallagher has no clue about economics and the principle of supply and demand. He talks in incoherent circles about politics and no one president being able to bring gas prices down. His conclusion is circular: bringing gas prices below one dollar is impossible for a president. Where in the world did this so-called journalist learn to write? In the sand or an asylum? His article is the most incoherent one on gas prices I have ever heard: you can't bring gas prices down because you can't bring gas prices down. Duh.

Now if he had taken at least one course in economics, perhaps he would have made a modicum of sense. There is no mention about supply or demand. When you cut the supply while demand ramps up, of course you will have high gas prices. add in the manipulation of interest rates for devaluing the dollar, and all prices go up at once. This is inflation. This is true when the government passes policy that redirects funding from oil to failed technology like wind and solar. These technologies are not ready for mass energy supplies, and they certainly don't supply synthetics for clothes and plastics. Compound the Fed Reserve's credit policies, and you have higher prices.

But that doesn't stop Obama from being like Carter. Remember the artificial shortages Carter created that made long lines at gas stations on odd and even days until supplies at these stations ran dry while we had the highest oil reserves ever. This is the same type of idiocy Obama is playing by placing a moritorium on drilling offshore and preventing the oil line from Canada to Texas. He's creating an environment of the imbalance of supply and demand. The anticipation of shortages sends prices through the roof.

Given this to be true, the reverse would also be true. Ample supplies toward equilibrium provides for price stability. Productivity also reduces prices. Does this Gallagher understand or even talk about this? NO!! He has no inkling of economic concepts to be able to grasp the obvious. But this is typical liberal gibberish from a ignorant journalist.

It should not but it most likely will because everyday people need to be able to drive their cars!
    • DesertDog  •  3 mths ago
It's like Rush said, the media can spin, spin, spin almost everything you read about the economy, but the one thing they CAN'T spin is that price all the American people see, when they face that gas pump, every week!

His publicly stated policy was to make it the price it is now, whether it's actually the fault, THIS TIME, of his constant oil obstructionist policies or not, there's just NO running away from that!
    • SPIDER2050  •  3 mths ago
Oh yes it should. The Democrat (Bolshevik Communist) energy policy? Ride a bike or walk.
    • terryton  •  3 mths ago
He blamed Bush for high gas prices in 2008. You live by criticizing, you die by criticizing.
    • free USA  •  3 mths ago
Yes, it should. It's part of his economic recovery plan. Obama boasts, and brags, how things are getting better, when other departments, and stats surface, contradicting his claims. Things, are getting worse, not better as he claims.

It doesn't help him, pertaining to the Taxpayer money he gave to green energy companies, that went bankrupt. Before Solyndra went down, the CEO gave him self a good bonus, and gave Obama campaign contributions. Recently, Whitehouse Staff ignored subpoenas for congressional investigation into Sylndra.

You and Obama have brass balls not to blame him.

Says the SAME "Media" and "Article Authors" who demanded IMPEACHMENT for GW Bush the last time gas prices were a big issue.
    • twigd2  •  3 mths ago
It's not just gas prices, how about Obama's lack of a budget? Haven't had on for years. He'll have run the debt up tho $16 Trillion by November, and his portion of that will equal the combined debt of every single one of his predecessors. He's also presided over the highest unemployment in 80 years, and will still have that distinction in November. And yes, he will have caused gas to reach the highest level ever. Anyone that thinks he's done a good job is just plain nuts.

He is President, then he is responsible. He has done nothing to help bring down rising oil prices.VOTE HIM OUT.
    • rick  •  Louisville, Kentucky  •  3 mths ago
Obama will lose in a landslide because of his record of failures. Highest long term unemployment, highest gas prices, most people on food stamps, higher health care cost, failure to enforce our laws, no plan for cutting our debt. More vacations than working days.
    • John  •  3 mths ago
No to worry, the price of gas is not the only thing that will get Obummer out of the White House.
