John Edwards was elected to the Senate in 1998. He gave up running for re-election in 2004 to mount a presidential bid. When that failed, he signed on as John Kerry's running mate. He gets praise for his charisma and easy speaking style, evoking comparisons to Bill Clinton. Edwards dropped out of the race after finishing third in the Florida primary. --AP
