Photography has become the medium of self-expression for Ellen Fisch after a long and notable career as a photographer and painter. “Currently I am focusing solely on photography as a way to communicate my artistic vision of the places that inspire me,” says the photographer. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Ellen Fisch has always appreciated the multitude of neighborhoods in New York City, every one unique in its own way. In each place Fisch photographs, she turns her lens on architecture and architectural detail that thematically encapsulates the history and culture of the neighborhood.
“Wall Street holds particular fascination for me,” reflects Fisch, “because as a child I would walk through the area to visit my grandfather, a jeweler, who had a bench on Nassau Street.” The bronze doors with their jewelry-like reliefs, sculpted ornamentation on buildings telling the story of commerce and the pace of “The Street” left a deep impression on the young, aspiring fine artist. Fisch sketched the impressive buildings of Wall Street over the years and spent much time photographing there. The lure of Wall Street led Fisch to customize several artworks for the Museum of American Finance where she has been showing and selling for the last decade.
Fisch’s current exhibition of fine art architectural photographs celebrates the Gilded Age of architecture and highlights many building techniques that are fast disappearing from our culture. The elaborate stone and metalwork that was lavished on structures was done in the past. Through her stunning black and white and sepia-toned photographs, Ellen Fisch creates art from the architecture and architectural detail that illuminate our history.
