    Employment Legal Team to Defend Federal Employees Nationwide in 2011

    According to attorney Gerald Gilliard (ggilliard(at)employmentlegalteam(dot)com), “Federal employees are, in the main, sophisticated, hard working individuals who earned their compensation and benefits through education, hard work, and service. However, in 2011, Members of Congress nonetheless politicized that compensation and those benefits in discussions to block early retirement for Federal employees and reduce benefits promised and provided under the Thrift Savings Plan. While some agency managers who have responded to rumors of hiring freezes with a flurry of hiring, may invariably seek to make way for new hires by removing experienced employees where possible. In trying times like these, our law firm will continue to advocate relentlessly for dedicated public servants.     Gerald Gilliard’s representation of clients in a broad range of labor and employment matters includes his former association with the only law firm to successfully represent a corporate whistleblower under the False Claims Act for committing contract fraud in the reconstruction of Iraq. He went on to serve as staff counsel for a federal-sector labor union with more than 600,000 members. His dedicated, unyielding legal representation and nationwide outreach efforts to thousands of Transportation Security Administration airport screeners (Transportation Security Officers, or TSOs) swayed many undecided TSOs in 2010 to elect Mr. Gilliard’s union as their collective bargaining representative. Since then Mr. Gilliard has represented Federal and private sector employees before the U.S. Merit Systems Protection Board, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

    Mr. Gilliard is a former board member of the D.C. Bar Labor and Employment Law Steering Committee and a current member of the Metropolitan Washington Employment Lawyers Association, an affiliate of the National Employment Law Association. Mr. Gilliard, the son of an Army Reserve sergeant, attended the University of Pennsylvania on an AFSCME scholarship and is a graduate of Georgetown University Law Center.

    Amber Smith, an associate with Employment Legal Team, is a graduate of the University of Georgia and the George Washington University Law School and a member of the New York State Bar Association. She has specific experience in the areas of federal sector employment law, wrongful termination suits, unfair bargaining issues, and unfair labor practices.
