The end of the world: R.E.M. calling it quits

    NEW YORK (AP) โ€” R.I.P. to R.E.M.

The alternative rock group that shook up the music world with its experimental, edgy sound and then earned multiplatinum success and a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced on its website Wednesday that it has "decided to call it a day as a band."

"A wise man once said โ€” 'the skill in attending a party is knowing when it's time to leave.' We built something extraordinary together. We did this thing. And now we're going to walk away from it," frontman Michael Stipe said in a statement on the website.

"I hope our fans realize this wasn't an easy decision; but all things must end, and we wanted to do it right, to do it our way."

The Grammy-winning group, now composed of Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck and bassist Mike Mills, released its debut album "Murmur" in 1983; at the time it was a quartet, with drummer Bill Berry. He left the group in 1997, two years after he suffered symptoms of an aneurysm onstage.

The group got its start in Athens, Ga., coming out of the region's flourishing indie-rock scene. The band was credited for helping launch college radio with songs such as "Radio Free Europe."

Later, the mainstream caught on, and R.E.M. became chart-topping rockers, selling millions of albums with hits like "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)," ''Losing My Religion" and "Everybody Hurts."

Stipe, the band's chief songwriter, crafted songs that were atypical of the standard rock fare. "Man on the Moon" was about the late comic Andy Kaufman. "Losing My Religion" was not about religion at all, but about trying to relay the feelings of a crush.

The band's videos also became staples on MTV in the 1990s, including the eye-catching "Losing My Religion" and the stark "Everybody Hurts," which had Stipe walking through a highway traffic jam.

R.E.M. became one of the more forceful voices of 1990s rock, and came along around the same time as another rock quartet โ€” U2. But whereas U2 managed to maintain (and even increase) its popularity over the years, R.E.M. stumbled commercially in recent years, and their hits dwindled.

The band continued to create music that resonated with critics and their core group of fans; the group's last album, "Collapse into Now," was released in March and a greatest hits retrospective is in the works.

But Mills said the band was running out of ideas.

"During our last tour, and while making 'Collapse Into Now' and putting together this greatest hits retrospective, we started asking ourselves, 'What next?'" he said. "Working through our music and memories from over three decades was a hell of a journey. We realized that these songs seemed to draw a natural line under the last 31 years of our working together."

Buck said the band parts as "great friends" and thanked fans for their support.

"One of the things that was always so great about being in R.E.M. was the fact that the records and the songs we wrote meant as much to our fans as they did to us," said Buck. "It was, and still is, important to us to do right by you. Being a part of your lives has been an unbelievable gift. Thank you."

Warner Bros. Records chairman and producer Rob Cavallo said, "To call R.E.M. one of the greatest bands in contemporary music is an understatement.ย They leave behind a body of work whose breadth, honesty, creativity and power has not only inspired millions of fans around the world, but also has influenced โ€” and will continue to influence โ€” generations of songwriters and performers for years to come."

Warner Bros. is releasing the greatest hits retrospective in November.

"R.E.M. ... came along around the same time as another rock quartet โ€” U2."

      Music is show business, and:
      1) all of U2's releases were on a major label, whereas R.E.M.'s first five (and perhaps most important) releases were on a smaller label that has since gone out of business;
      2) U2's performance at Live Aid in 1985 propelled the band to international stardom, while R.E.M. was still touring the college circuit; and
      3) Bono is a charismatic showman, whereas Michael Stipe is not.

R.E.M will be listened to for decades to come, too bad all the great bands are either obsolete or not given great importance. Nowadays I only listen to jazz music and independent bands, I just can't deal with the pop crap they've been pushing down our throats lately, i.e...Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj, Kanye and the list of the non-talents goes on.....

I wish certain other bands would realize when it's time to hang it up. Good for them to know it's time to move along.

You're only on this planet once, and you might as well do what you think is right for you instead of doing what other people think is right for you. Good luck!

I used to be a huge fan in college but lost interest after Michael Stipe's singing became intelligible. I think that was around Monster. Still, their early work was amazing.

This is the right decision. I used to be a huge fan of REM back in the 1980's and early 90's but their music has just sucked in the last 20 years. each album has gotten worse and worse. Glad they are finished!

I wished they hadn't announced this. It always seems that music groups "break up" and ten years later they get back together. They should just say they have no plans to work together or release another CD at this time. It's like when Sinatra kept going in and out of retirement.

Hey, at least they knew their time had come and gone. While Accelerate was a nice comeback album with a new producer who brought the drumming back into the band, this last albume was forgettable this year. No hits at all while Accelerate had a few. They did a lot over three decades, but I don't blame them for this decision. Good luck and best wishes to all of them.

I am sad to hear this is the "Final Straw" (one of my favorite songs) for R.E.M. So many other great songs through the years. So many interesting lyrics. I wish the end could have come differently, but I understand, according to Mike Mills, the band was running out of ideas. I liked Michael's line, "the skill in attending a party is knowing when it's time to leave." If they feel it is their time to exit stage left, then I applaud them and wish them the best of luck. I will hope for some sort of reunion in the years to come. The Eagles later came back with "Hell Freezes Over" years ago, so maybe R.E.M will find similar inspiration at some point in time. R.E.M. may stand for Rapid Eye Movement, but today I believe it should stand for Remember Excellent Music. Thanks for everything and best of luck!
