    Energy Department says oil supplies increased

    NEW YORK (AP) — The nation's crude oil supplies increased last week, the government said Thursday.

    Crude supplies rose by 1.6 million barrels, or 0.5 percent, to 340.7 million barrels, according to the Energy Department. That's 1.7 percent less than year-ago levels.

    Analysts expected supplies to increase by 1.7 million barrels for the week ended Feb. 17, according to Platts, the energy information arm of McGraw-Hill Cos.

    Gasoline supplies fell by 600,000 barrels, or 0.3 percent, to 231.5 million barrels. That's 2.8 percent lower than year-ago levels. Analysts expected gasoline supplies to decrease by 450,000 barrels.

    Demand for gasoline over the four weeks ended Feb. 17 was 6.1 percent less than a year earlier, averaging 8.2 million barrels a day.

    U.S. refineries ran at 85.5 percent of total capacity on average, up 1.5 percent from the prior week. Analysts expected capacity to fall to 83.4 percent.

    Supplies of distillate fuel, which include diesel and heating oil, fell by 200,000 barrels to 143.5 million barrels. Analysts expected distillate stocks to decrease by 1.75 million barrels.

    The government report was released a day later than usual because of the Presidents Day holiday on Monday.

    Benchmark crude rose 21 cents to $106.49 a barrel in New York.
