EngageRI dissolves, saying mission accomplished

Pro-pension overhaul group in RI votes to dissolve, calls law 'appropriate and constitutional'

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- A well-funded, business-backed organization created to help advocate for an overhaul of Rhode Island's public pension system has voted to dissolve.

EngageRI Chairman John Galvin said in a statement the board decided to do so because there's no further role for public debate and the group has fulfilled its mission.

The General Assembly in 2011 approved a sweeping overhaul of the state's pension system that suspended pension increases, raised retirement ages and created a new benefit plan benefit plan that combines traditional pensions with 401(k)-style accounts.

The law is being challenged in court by public-sector unions.

Galvin called the pension law an "appropriate and constitutional solution." He said the group was mystified the suit was referred to mediation but that it is confident the law will remain in place.
