Engineered salmon still a distant reality

WASHINGTON (AP) — Members of Congress are pushing to stop the Food and Drug Administration from approving genetically engineered salmon, saying not enough is known about a fish they say could harm fishery businesses in coastal states.

It appeared last year that the FDA might approve the engineered salmon quickly. But the congressional pushback and a lack of action by the FDA could mean the fish won't be on the nation's dinner tables any time soon.

The fish, which grows twice as fast as the conventional variety, is engineered by AquaBounty, a Massachusetts-based company, but not yet allowed on the market. The company's application has been pending for more than 15 years. If the agency approves it, it would be the first time the government allows such modified animals to be marketed for people to eat.

Congressional opposition to the engineered fish is led by members of the Alaska delegation. They see the modified salmon as a threat to the state's wild salmon industry.

In June, the House adopted an amendment by Rep. Don Young, R-Alaska, to an agriculture spending bill that would prevent the FDA from spending any money on approving the fish. His amendment was approved by voice vote with no objections.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, said last week she will attempt to add the same amendment to the Senate version of the bill.

"It kind of gives me the heebie jeebies that we are messing with what Mother Nature did a pretty good job with in terms of a king salmon," Murkowski said.

While Murkowski's opposition is rooted in concern for her state's fishing industry, other senators have expressed worries about potential food safety or environmental risks. More than a dozen senators have written the FDA with concern about the approval process and food safety and environmental risks. Bills to stop the salmon have been introduced in both chambers.

Ron Stotish, the chief executive of AquaBounty, said he was optimistic when the FDA decided to hold hearings on the company's application. But a year later, he said, he is frustrated by the delay and has lost investors in his business.

"If you had asked me a year ago if we would be having this conversation, I would have said no," he said.

The FDA is still in the process of completing their review, spokesman Doug Karas said, "although we cannot predict when that will be."

Karas said the FDA is planning on releasing a review of potential environmental impacts of growing the salmon — and soliciting public comments on that review — before reaching a decision. That means a decision could be months or even years away.

In the hearings last year, FDA officials said the fish is as safe to eat as the traditional variety. But critics call the modified salmon a "frankenfish." They say they are concerned it could cause human allergies and the eventual decimation of the wild salmon population if the engineered animals escape.

AquaBounty has maintained that the fish is safe and that there are several safeguards against environmental problems. The fish would be bred female and sterile, though a very small percentage might still be able to breed. The company said potential for escape is low. The FDA backed these assertions in documents released before these hearings last year.

Genetically engineered — or GE — animals are not clones, which the FDA has already said are safe to eat. Clones are copies of an animal. In GE animals, the DNA has been altered to produce a desirable characteristic. The process is common in plant foods like corn and soybeans.

In the case of the salmon, AquaBounty has added a growth hormone from a Chinook salmon that allows the fish to produce growth hormone all year long. The engineers were able to keep the hormone active by using another gene from an eel-like fish called an ocean pout that acts like an on switch for the hormone. Typical salmon produce the growth hormone only some of the time.

Stotish acknowledged that approval of AquaBounty's product is likely more difficult because they are the first. Approval of the company's application would open the door for a variety of other genetically engineered animals, including an "Enviropig" being developed in Canada that has less-polluting manure or cattle that are resistant to mad cow disease. Each would have to be individually approved by the FDA.

"Blocking us is the best way to block anything that would come behind us," Stotish said.

When these genetically engineered salmon start swimming upstream to spawn, they will be grabbing bears and eating them.

There comes a time when any Government entity is no longer needed. I think the FDA falls into that catagory along with Big Pharma, Monsanto and huge corporate greed. People will stop eating salmon when they become robo fish hence zero profit greedy bitches

They have something similar in the UK, but with rainbow trout. In this case, they are called 'triploid' trout, because they fertilize the eggs at an elevated temperature which gives them three sets of chromosomes, rather than the usual two. It makes them grow very fast, they are quite aggressive and fun to catch and taste perfectly splendid. This is what they stock all over the UK , and Brits are very disappointed when they come over here to fish, as the trout here are tiny, pale and listless in comparison....

Why do you think modified salmon is a threat to the states wild salmon industry. When Salmon farming produces un-natural and unusal flavored flesh as compared to Wild salmon. My stomach can not take Farmed salmon, too much white veined Fat. It's un-natural. Wild salmon does not make me burp and I do not have to push the white globuals of stuff away while cooking and eating, something's wrong with that. It doesent happen on wild salmon!
Instead give a wild salmon un polluted clean waters to live in and reproduce twice as much.
I suspect this artical was written as a PR report for the investors trying to recover their 15 year profits.

Time and time again it has been proven that Corporations don't really care about collateral damage to anything as long as they get thier profits. And they have bought enough of Congress and the Judiciary to make sure that they get them. We no longer live in a democracy . .we live on the ever expanding Global Plantation.

don't you people see how BAD the corporate tea party republicans are screwing the American people? no stem cell research,.BUT China can and does,.. drill here/drill now using American pride as a tool,.but,. the oil is not American oil,.. it is sold by the oil company to the highest bidder so Americans gain NOTHING,. In philippines they already have genetically modified chickens,..SAME as the salmon,.. I mean the chickens are sterile and grow to maturity in 45 days,.. why is everyone else in the world getting a jump start on USA? oh,.yeah,.because the corporations are already here in Asia paying 4 dollars a day labor,..oh, yeah,. and since they grow so fast, the bones are delicate,. won't survive long if allowed to grow like regular chickens,.or fish,.. will be slow, docile,. the regular salmon will kick their butt,. for real,.. just like the chickens,.

Lets say I patent a fish by genetically modifying it. Let's say those fish swim near a waterway on your property. I don't care if you live in Australia or Michigan. THAT FISH IS MINE AND ANY FUTURE OFFSPRING. Because I own the patent to that genetic modification. I own the species, you try to grow it, sell it, cultivate it, use it in anyway, I don't care if you are in australia, china, europe or michigan. My patent, my fish. I don't care if it swims in your backyard pond. My patent, my fish. I will sue you, and make you pay.

I will not rest until we have cyborg salmon.

i heard that these salmon would be able to swim faster and jump higher and for longer distances.....so id stay away from the streams during spawning season because theres going to be some pissed off hungry skinny bears hanging around there

no, don't approve it, this does not sound good. I want to see very long term studies on the affect of eating fish with this extended activation of a growth hormone gene. I want to see extensive labelling - you go into a restaurant and I want to see - grown unnaturally with altered genes. I'm not all against altered genes but in this case I'm spooked based on what I've heard.

really? you people want to complain now? you have been eating genetically modified foods for over a decade now. 95% of corn, 95% soybean, 95% wheat are ALL genetically modified. Beef and pork have been laced with growth hormones for decades. Chickens have been genetically modified to grow more breast meat and to fully grow in 45 days where it used to take 90 days. Ever seen a chicken who outgrew his own muscle and bone? A chicken so fat that it couldn't walk more than a step before plopping down on its own weight? LOL you people are so naive

FDA says genetically modified foods DO NOT NEED TO BE LABELED. And now theres a war with Europe and coutries like Belgium and France who have fought against genetically modified foods. Don't believe me? do you own research. But then again, you might never want to eat again, if you really knew where and how your food comes to your mouth.

Congress, as is it habit, ignores 15 years of study, but listens instead to its lobbyists! There is no hope for this group of politicians. They also opposed for many years the same developments in grains that had been proven safe. Millions in the developing world starved for the want of this increased food production while congress diddled with its lobbyists. How else can you be constantly re-elected if not for lobbyist cash for the next campaign?
      • Dick 8 mths ago
There's enough food to feed everyone. Why don't you reveal the fact that genetically modified foods are PATENTED. Therefore whoever owns the patent, they own the species. "Development in grains that have been proven safe"? Proven by who? Monsanto? How ironic you bash lobbyists, when you are lobbying on behalf of AquaBounty. You shouldn't underestimate the intelligence of people out there....

hows those GMO corns doing? Those pest resistent corns now producing "superbugs" who are resistent to pesiticide. How are those "superweeds" doing, resisting Monsanto's latest patents.

In your quest to "privitize" nature, you will just mess it up. But then again, if you gain a little profit from world devastation, it wouldn't bother you much would it?

Google Monsanto. Google genetically modified foods. do your own research, don't rely on people who's motive is profit, even at the expense of everyone else.

Don't waste your time trying to tell John. He has done his own research. He has read what corporate reseachers have said and he believe them.
    • accountant retired  •  8 mths ago
we could use lower priced fish actually I think.
      • /Billie J 8 mths ago
You must be lazy. You can have lower priced fish if you catch it yourself. Beside nothing that our corporation do will cause prices to go down.
