The 10 best movies coming to Netflix in May

Here are the best movies coming to the streaming giant this month.

“The Edge of Seventeen” (May 1)

Hailee Steinfeld is fantastic in this coming-of-age comedy in which she plays high schooler Nadine, who hates everything about school other than hanging out with her best friend, Krista (Haley Lu Richardson). But when Krista suddenly begins to date Nadine's older brother (Blake Jenner) things go from bad to worse.

Woody Harrelson also gives a great performance as the teacher Nadine leans on for support.

“The Equalizer” (May 1)

This flick would kick off the only franchise Denzel Washington has been a part of.

Here, he plays an ex-Marine living a quiet life in Boston until helping a teen who is entangled in the Russian mafia turns him into a vigilante with a unique set of skills to unleash revenge on his opponents.

“Jumanji” (May 1)

This classic 1995 family action comedy stars Robin Williams as a man who has been trapped in a board game since he was a child. Finally set free by two kids (Kirsten Dunst and Bradley Pierce), the act also unleashes elements from the game into the real world, like dangerous safari animals and booby traps. The three now have to finish the game to set everything right.

“Liar Liar” (May 1)

Jim Carrey is at the height of his physical comedy talents in this movie, where he plays a lawyer who can no longer lie after his son makes a birthday wish.

The way Carrey has little regard for his health as he contorts and flings his body in every scene to get laughs is one of the most impressive feats in his beloved filmography.

“Ride Along” (May 1)

Kevin Hart and Ice Cube make up a funny duo in this comedy released in 2014. Hart plays Ben, a security guard who has to prove to his girlfriend's brother, James (Cube), that he's worthy to marry her. It leads to Ben going on a 24-hour patrol with James. Beginning as James just messing around with Ben by putting him into staged situations, it leads to the two actually getting into some legitimate danger.

“Traffic” (May 1)

Steven Soderbergh won an Oscar for this gripping drama that looks at drug trade from the perspective of users, enforcers, politicians, and traffickers.

Shot in different colored filters to indicate the different perspectives, each showcased top-notch performances from the likes of Michael Douglas, Don Cheadle, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Benicio del Toro, who also won an Oscar.

“The Wedding Planner” (May 1)

Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Lopez are a perfect match in this 2001 rom-com.

Lopez plays a wedding planner, and McConaughey is the latest groom she's working with. But things get complicated when they fall for each other.

“Unfrosted” (May 3)

Marking Jerry Seinfeld's feature film directing debut, he also stars in this comedy loosely based on the creation of the Pop-Tart.

Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Amy Schumer, Hugh Grant, Peter Dinklage, Bill Burr, Christian Slater, and James Marsden also star.

“Sing Street” (May 9)

This is one you cannot pass up. From director John Carney ("Once"), this coming-of-age story set in 1980s Dublin follows a boy who starts a band to impress the girl he has a crush on.

Along with the great performances, it features some catchy songs made for the movie.

“A Simple Favor” (May 19)

Paul Feig's acclaimed thriller stars Anna Kendrick as a vlogger who sets out to solve the sudden disappearance of her mysterious and very elegant friend (played by Blake Lively).
