Given that the Met Gala is often dubbed “fashion’s biggest night out,” it’s safe to assume that an invite to the prestigious New York event is one of the most sought after tickets.

Every year, on the first Monday in May, A-listers from Kim Kardashian to Blake Lively make their way up the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in extravagant looks that are chosen to fit the theme of the event while the world watches.

In 2024, celebrity co-chairs Zendaya, Chris Hemsworth, Bad Bunny and Jennifer Lopez will be in attendance to greet famous guests dressed in line with this year’s theme, “The Garden of Time,” which was selected to honor the Costume Institute’s new exhibit “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.”

Due to the secretive nature of the guest list, we never know who will walk the red carpet until the night gets underway but we can likely guess some people who absolutely will not be there!

Some of these stars have chosen to never return to the event, like Jennifer Garner who revealed she never wants to go back to the Met Gala after a bad experience in 2007. But some stars have, allegedly, been excluded against their will.

While Anna Wintour, who famously oversees the guest list, has only explicitly confirmed one banned guest (more on that later), other stars are believed to have been indefinitely excluded from the Met Gala for a range of reasons.

90s heartthrob Josh Hartnett was deemed not relevant enough for the Met Gala back in 2016 documentary, The First Monday in May, which took audiences behind-the-scenes of the event.

In the doc, a Vogue staffer was seen responding to Calvin Klein’s request to dress the Pearl Harbour star and have him sit at his table, saying: “What has he done lately? Nothing. You guys are all set.”

Rachel Zoe

It’s widely speculated that designer Rachel Zoe was indefinitely uninvited from the Met Gala after she made comments that probably didn’t go over too well with Met Gala organizer and Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour.

“Anna Wintour is one of my heroes, but they say that I’m more influential. As great as it is, Vogue won’t change a designer’s business,” Zoe told the New York Times in 2007.

However, Zoe did attend the event in 2010 and 2012 so we’re not sure if this alleged “ban” is real!

Lili Reinhart

Riverdale star Lili Reinhart attended the Met Gala in 2018, 2019 and 2021 but later speculated that she won’t be invited back after criticizing Met Gala royalty Kim Kardashian over her comments about comitting to an extreme diet to fit into the Marilyn Monroe gown she wore in 2022.

“I don’t think I’ll be invited back,” Reinhart told W Magazine in 2022. “I said a certain something about a certain person in a certain dress.”

Indeed, Reinhart was not in attendance at the 2023 Met Gala.

Tim Gunn

Celebrity fashion presenter and author Tim Gunn confirmed that he is banned from the Met Gala during a 2016 appearance on E! Entertainment’s Fashion Police when host Joan Rivers asked if the rumors about his ban are true.

“It is very true. It is a crazy story, and as far as I’m concerned, it’s a very matter-of-fact story,” he shared. “I was asked what is the most unforgettable thing I’ve ever seen in fashion and I said, ‘It’s easy. It was watching Anna Wintour being carried down five flights of stairs by two bodyguards—two big hulking men—from a fashion show.’ All hell broke loose. It was insane. We’ve had an open war ever since.”

Donald Trump

Trump was once regulars at the fashion event and it is even where he propsed to wife Melania! But, during a 2017 appearance on The Late Show with James Corden, Anna Wintour confirmed that Trump is the one person she would never invite back to the event.

We’re guessing that after Wintour’s explicit criticism of Trump, his wife probably won’t be back at the event any time soon.

Ivanka Trump

Ivanka Trump’s last appearance at the Met Gala was about a year before Wintour made it clear that her father was no longer welcome so we’re guessing the ban may have extended to the whole family.

Ironically, Ivanka’s brother-in-law Josh Kushner is a Met Gala regular thanks to his supermodel wife Karlie Kloss, who allegedly has a strained relationship with the former president’s daughter.
