Eddie Redmayne has been nominated for a Tony Award for the musical Cabaret on Broadway, two years after he won an Olivier for playing the same role in the West End.

Redmayne appeared as the Emcee when the show was revived in London in 2022, and is now starring in the New York transfer.

Cabaret received nine Tony nominations in total on Tuesday - despite Broadway's critics being less enthusiastic than those in the West End.

Three new shows lead this year's Tonys race. Hell's Kitchen, based on the life and songs of Alicia Keys, has 13 nominations, as does Stereophonic, which has music by The Arcade Fire's Will Butler.

The Outsiders, an adaptation of Francis Ford Coppola's 1983 film about rival 1960s gangs, has 12 nominations.

Redmayne's nomination for best actor in a leading role in a musical comes 14 years after he scored his only previous Tony win for the play Red.

When Cabaret opened in London in 2022, he was joined in the cast by Irish actress Jessie Buckley as Sally Bowles.

In New York, that role has been taken by Scottish actress Gayle Rankin, who is nominated for the Tony for best actress in a leading role in a musical.

Rankin appeared in the last Broadway revival of Cabaret a decade ago, in a smaller role, and has since starred in Netflix series Glow and will soon be seen in the second season of Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon.

Other big names up for this year's Tonys include Jessica Lange, Rachel McAdams and Sarah Paulson, who are all nominated for best actress in a leading role in a play.

Succession star Jeremy Strong is shortlisted for best actor in a leading role in a play for Ibsen's An Enemy of the People. He faces competition from Michael Stuhlbarg, Leslie Odom Jr, Liev Schreiber and William Jackson Harper.

Daniel Radcliffe is in the running for the prize for best actor in a featured role in a musical for playing Charley in Stephen Sondheim's Merrily We Roll Along, which has seven nominations overall.

Other British nominees include DJ Fatboy Slim, who is nominated for best original score alongside Talking Heads frontman David Byrne for the musical Here Lies Love.

The winners will be announced on 16 June.
