    EPA bans sewage discharge from cruise ships

    SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Federal environmental regulators have given final approval to a rule that bans cruise ships and large cargo vessels from releasing sewage into the ocean within three miles of California's coast.

    U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said Thursday that the new rule will strengthen existing state law which bans cruise ships from releasing a host of toxic pollutants into coastal waters.

    EPA Regional Administrator Jared Blumenfeld said the rule bans all sewage discharges, treated or not, along California's 1,624-mile coast and around major islands.

    Blumenfeld said the "no discharge zone" will prevent more than 20 million gallons of vessel sewage from entering the state's coastal waters.

    The rules will cover cruise liners, which can hold 6,000 people at a time, and cargo vessels of 300 gross tons or more.

        and the Coast Guard as well... when I was serving on a ship, we dumped sewage, used diesel oil and jet fuel filters, trash, broken pumps and old equipment.

      O.K., follow me on this. We've all heard of a person bringing some animal from half way around the globe here as a pet. Then somehow they flush it down the toilet or setting it free in the wild. The result? A creature not part of the natural environment. So we end up with a big problem in the food chain. Same thing when you have a ship traveling the globe and picking up all kinds of fouls germs in one place and dumping them in another. Hope that helps some to understand.

        The Obama administration worries about ships pumping sewage into the ocean, but they don't mind if Mexico exports their sewage across our border. And then Obama gives the sewage welfare, free healthcare, free education, food, free housing, everything. And some of this sewage is carrying serious fire power! But Obama doesn't care. He's out on the golf course, unaffected by the sewage.

      In case you don't know, ships dump oil and sewage routinely. This does nothing to stop ships under 300 tons from doing the same, and it continues everyday.

      wow banned a whole 3 miles away from the coast.i guess too many baby ruth bars were washing ashore.they will just dump it 4 miles away and it will end up in the great pacific ocean patch with the rest of the trash.just another slap on the wrist for the polluters and a slap in the face to mother nature

      Not a bad idea to regulate close to shore dumping, but I think sewage is misunderstood for the most part on this board. In large concentrations in smaller waterways yes it is harmful, but out in the ocean, it is a buffett for all kinds of animals from plankton on up. I do think the bigger issue is fuel and oil and other garbage that gets dumped or leaked by the ships. After seeing what that Youtube Great white did, I have no problem peeing int he Ocean.

      Three miles what a typical idiot joke of an idea. We need reform the EPA, FDA, and our congress and president along with presidential contenders need to be cleaned out.
