Erie police investigating series of shots-fired incidents that left casings at 4 locations

Erie police are hunting down and reviewing surveillance video and are speaking to witnesses in a series of shots-fired incidents in parts of the city on Wednesday night.

The incidents, identified by the city's ShotSpotter gunshot detection system and in at least one case by citizen reports, occurred over a roughly 30-minute stretch. No one was reported injured, but shell casings were collected at each of the scenes, police reported Thursday.

The first report came in at 9:42 p.m. Wednesday in the 300 block of West 23rd Street. Officers recovered one shell casing at the scene, Deputy Chief Rick Lorah said. Ten seconds later, police were alerted to a report of gunfire in the 2100 block of Chestnut Street, close to the scene of the first reported shooting, and they recovered one shell casing at that location, Lorah said.

At 9:58 p.m., gunfire was detected in the 1800 block of Downing Avenue. Officers who responded collected one shell casing at the scene, Lorah said.

Police were then called to the 1100 block of East Lake Road at 10:15 p.m. Wednesday. Witnesses reported seeing a truck traveling on East Lake Road when the gunfire was heard, and officers collected three shell casings at that scene, according to Lorah.

Erie police major crimes detectives are investigating the incidents, he said.
