    EU committee makes no decision on 'oil sands'

    BRUSSELS (AP) — An EU committee has failed to decide on a proposal to label so-called oil sands as worse for climate change than average crude oil.

    A spokesman for EU Climate Commissioner Connie Hedegaard said the proposal will now go to the European Council — representatives of the EU's 27 member countries —

    Canada had threatened to take the EU to the World Trade Organization if it singled out oil sands as dirty. But the European Commission contends that science justifies the proposal.

    The EU committee vote was 54 for the proposal, 128 against and 128 abstaining. The vote was by qualified majority, a system in which larger countries have more votes than smaller ones, and 255 votes were needed for the committee to approve or reject the proposal.

      "I was surprised by the results of our analysis," said Andrew Weaver, a University of Victoria climate modeller, who has been a lead author on two reports from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. "I thought it was larger than it was.".............................

      What are they worried about? One of their own has said oil sands are not the problem. Now if they could just devise a scheme to tax and regulate water vapor....CHA CHING!

        Coal buring power plants require significant energy to extract the coal that it burns. Then we transmit that energy through massive transmission lines to our house hold appliances that end up using only 6% of the total energy that was in the original coal...We need to wake up to the inefficiency of our electrical system prior to painting the oil sands with the devils picture

      This is absolutly a waste of time and shows the stupidity of our leaders. Maby they should study the effects of worms crawling north and south versus east and west, I would put that in the same catagory and if it keeps politicians busy maby they won't be screwing up something up that is important.
