    EU Internet czar comes out against SOPA

    BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union's Internet czar has added her voice to resistance of the Stop Online Piracy Act, in an unusually open comment on U.S. legislation.

    Neelie Kroes, the EU's Commissioner for the Digital Agenda, tweeted Friday "Glad tide is turning on SOPA: don't need bad legislation when should be safeguarding benefits of open net."

    The piece of legislation, currently in the House of Representatives, would allow the U.S. Justice Department to target legitimate sites where users share pirated content.

    Outrage over SOPA earlier this week triggered a one-day blackout by Wikipedia's English-language service and sparked to growing scrutiny of the bill.

    The EU is also struggling with its attempts to tackle online piracy — but without restricting Internet freedom.

    Kroes favors a less invasive approach, tweeting "Speeding is illegal too: but you don't put speed bumps on the motorway."

      As you can see, this is a slanted argument. This is exactly why we need our internet highways to remain open.

      If you were remanded to only reading these news articles it states that the purpose of the legislation is to target pirated content from legitimate sites. This is not 100% true. This bill will allow information to be copyrighted.

      You can copyright anything that can be deemed your work.

      I believe that Thomson Reuters Global Resources, Patricia E. Salkin and Lora A Lucero should be able to copyright Patricia E. Salkin’s book, “2011 Zoning and Planning Law Handbook”.

      However, how on earth will we be able to separate her book from the actual legislation that exists for all to see?

      Are we that advanced yet? The answer—No.

      Why is the above statement important; because if you go to Copyright, the U.S. Copyright Office, there is a section that reads:

      "The distinction between fair use and infringement (on copy protected material) may be unclear and not easily defined. There is no specific number of words, lines, or notes that may safely be taken without permission. Acknowledging the source of the copyrighted material does not substitute for obtaining permission."

      ...Should I also worry that this page and section is copyrighted?

      If so, it could be pulled from any site, and you would not have access to it from your usual source. You would need to know the exact site of a governmental office, and you would still need a "Google" to find it.

      Are you ready to go back 400 years?

      Protect ingenuity and hard work; but do not set up the future for tyrannical rule.

      Good for her. She uses only a few choice words and puts our politicians to shame. Our government has become too control crazy. Freedom of Speech seems to be a foreign term here in America these days.

        No, it isn't. Haven't paid enough attention? Ok, short primer: SOPA would enable the Attorney General to alter the DNS system (through demands to the appropriate technical groups), changing how it currently works in order to shutdown "problem" domains. Putting speed bumps on the motorway (freeway, if I'm not mistaken, in Europe), would alter how it works in order "shutdown" problem speeders. See the analogy now? It was a simple statement made to shed _some_ light on the situation. In any case Kroes is right, this is absolutely _horrible_ legislation. It won't stop piracy, it will simply break the internet.

        I do not find this information anywhere; could you be a little more specific. Because CLICO and HCU were in trouble in 2011. The government was to bail it out (as usual).

        [ in reply ] CLICO and HCU Customers will never get their money back but they will get plenty promises, the rest of the banks are in line just behind CLICO and HCU.
