Europeans Fall in Love More Quickly Than Americans, Study Finds

Americans take longer to fall in love than their Eastern European counterparts, according to a new study. The findings also showed that Americans frequently cited friendship as a key part of romantic love, while Russians and Lithuanians rarely mentioned it.

The study found that about 90 percent of Lithuanians reported falling in love within a month of meeting one another, with 39 percent falling in love within a matter of days. By comparison, 58 percent of American participants indicated they fell in love within two months to a year.

To see how different cultures view and practice romantic love, the researchers surveyed 1,157 adults from the United States, Russia and Lithuania. Participants were given a 14-item questionnaire meant to gauge how they perceived romantic love, and also asked to write a freelist answering the question, "What do you associate with romantic love?" Group interviews were also conducted.

The list responses showed that most of the Eastern European participants viewed romantic love as fleeting, but this was not the case for Americans. [See top 10 lists from all three cultures]

"The idea that romantic love was temporary and inconsequential was frequently cited by Lithuanian and Russian informants, but not by U.S. informants," the researchers write in the journal Cross-Cultural Research. The Eastern Europe participants also referred to romantic love as "a stage," "unreal" and a "fairytale."

Furthermore, while Americans frequently cited "friendship" and "comfort/love" as requirements for romantic love, other participants either seldom or never mentioned these requirements. In fact, the word "friendship" is absent from the more than 500 terms elicited from the Eastern European samples.

"Friendship speaks of a real and substantive relationship; friends are not temporary," the researchers write. "Thus it seems to reason that with friendship come other qualities that are missing or infrequently cited in the Eastern European sample, but are frequently cited in the U.S. sample  — 'honesty,' 'content' and 'comfort.'"

There were some similarities among the American, Russian and Lithuanian responses. All three groups rated "being together," "sexual passion" and "a state of emotional arousal-happiness/joy" as features of romantic love. "Equality" and "sex" were also two main features mentioned by the groups.

The study was carried out by scientists at the State University of New York at New Paltz and Russia's Moscow State University for the Humanities.

Easily explained. Americans go co-ed schools, start dating at the age of 12, and exchange rings by 14. The European tends to go to single sex schools, with a more demanding scholastic curriculum , so that when they do meet up with the opposite gender, late teens, there is a novelty that attracts the emotions.

I wonder how much money that study costed the tax payers?

I think it partially comes down to semantics. In Lithuanian the term "draugas" is rather vague... could mean friend and/or boyfriend..while "drauge" could mean friend or girlfriend

Why only Americans (Which include Canada) and Europeans ,what about Asians.Defiantly Indians never fall in love before they marry but when they have the first baby, for some people it comes only after the second baby then they realize they are not made for each other .Parents are happy they got rid of them, it is time to fall in love.

There should be a study on why people keep making dumb studies... and why Yahoo keeps reporting on the conclusions of these dumb studies.

The average lifespan of a Russian is less than 64 years. The average lifespan of an American is over 75 years....we Americans have a little more time, not so pressured to fall in love.

The average Russian is 33% less weight the average overweight American who is 180lbs (women) and 220lbs (men).... Americans are the fatest people in the world BUT not so pressured to fall in love.

The question that begs to be asked: How much free grant money did this trivia question level of research got and burned through. Why was this research conducted what was the burning question that needed to be answered.

The truth is eastern european women 'fall in love' when they meet a guy who has money. It has nothing to do with looks, attraction, or a feeling of co-existance. They see it only as a chance to be supported. i've seen this first hand.

Americans are too fat, lazy, selfish and drunk to fall in love at first while Europeans are more romantic and aren't addicted to guns, booze, drugs, alcohol and stuffing their face while watching TV 24/7 as they focus on reality shows like that filthy Jersey Shore and Big Brother. Americans actually are brainwashed by Jersey Shore and think that's who you conduct yourself in real life.

another big difference is most of the families in east european countries have one pot for money as a family budget. and they never really hold each other on the hook for contributions. i find they have more trust and love in the family as well as incredible social life in general through their lives. north american couples split the budget in the middle contribute to the pot their share and each of them keeps/controls/distributes the rest of their money as they see fit. nobody cares about anyone, dog eat dog attitude, no social life. there is a huge amount distrust, males are under constant pressure of loosing everything, double standards in everything (simple example: a female hugs a male stranger and kisses-nothing happens, the other way around warrants a jail time).

Lets go to Eastern Europe to pick up young & beautiful blonde chicks!!! Hopefully will not be arrested by KGB, and be sent to Siberia to do hard labour for the rest of my life!

Europeans are just more sociable in general. They just enjoy the company of their fellow humans more than north americans. They're better looking too for the most part.

People fall in love when they fall in love no matter where they live.
Wonder how much money went into doing a study on this.
I hope they aren't mistaking sex for real love. People have gone about having sex and not being in love with the person they are having it with.
And loving someone and being IN LOVE withe someone is two different emotions.

Yeah cultural difference is key. Americans usually want to know the person well before making a commitment. I Know Europeans give that free love easily. A different culture, not necessarily wrong.
      • Anonymous 9 mths ago
Also Americans don't have much trust among themselves. Too many bad selfish people, and also too many evil people. Europe, generally more safer, and people are more trusting.

They all want to get out of Communist states, because Communism still exists in reality, although not in name.

I agree, I don’t blame the Americans! I’m, a proud western European from continental Europe. I don’t know I also don’t fall in love quickly! I tend to be rational and overly cautious and careful. These days with creeps like sociopaths, psychopaths, the most dangerous ones are those who come from Ivy League Universities, who smile. Are charming, well spoken, well traveled and from well off families-spoiled brats who are masters at disguising their evil psychopathic two faces!!! Plus with tons of con artists, rapist, and etc, one can never be too carful!!! I say: friendship first, and get to know the person, really well, find out if he gets along with his parents, and how does his father treat his mother? Are his parents in an equal, happy relationship where both love and equally respect one another? Does he come from an overly freaking; strict religious background (Is his father a minister, or primate or what not.) How does he treat his mother and he is a misogynist in disguise, I mean, does he act politically correct in public to hide his secretive misogynist, old-fashioned views about women??? Analyze his personality first! Love comes after!!!!! Better be safe than sorry and it does not hurt to get a police background check as well!!!! These days, one can never be too careful!!!!

None of this would be necessary if the parents did a good job instilling good instincts. Not everyone falls for a charade and yet manage to fall in love quickly. It's a matter of good instincts.

What does the parents' current relationship have to do with a person's personality? A lot of marriages fail after their children have grown up but it doesn't mean they weren't good parents to their child as they were growing up! And if the person doesn't get along well with a certain family member or parent, it doesn't mean there is something wrong with them. There are often very valid reasons for it, and there's no such thing as coming from a perfect family!
