Evan Thomas: ‘Excellent chance’ Israel attacks Iran and US drawn in this year [VIDEO]

Last week, violence struck the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, killing 63 just days after U.S. troops completed their withdrawal, making it the deadliest day in over a year.

On this weekend’s broadcast of “Inside Washington,” Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer blamed the violence on President Barack Obama, suggesting this might not have happened had he left a “residual” force in the beleaguered country.

“This is a direct result of the vacuum created by the president, against the recommendations of the generals on the ground to leave a force,” Krauthammer said. “And that is a failure of this administration. We had three years to do one thing. The surge had succeeded “ al Qaida had been defeated, and in the surge, even [Nouri al-] Maliki had reduced and defeated the Shiite militias, who are now resurgent in Basra and in Baghdad. In other words, you had the beginnings of a national government. And what we needed was America in the continuity, and as soon as it was removed gratuitously, all of the unraveling has begun.”

Former Newsweek editor Evan Thomas, now a columnist for Politico and co-author of “Playbook 2012: The Right Fights Back” with Mike Allen, however, warns this unrest in Iraq could spread to Iran. He said the unrest could push Israel into a strike against Iran, which the United States would be drawn into as soon as this year “ an election year.

“I think most Americans really want to believe this is behind us and past us,” Thomas said. “And you know, not only is it goin to happen, is it happening in Iraq, but Iran — I think there is an excellent chance that this year, this election year, Israel is going to attack Iran and the United States is going to be drawn back into a really scary, violent situation…” Thomas said.

    Watch:

Thomas’ “Inside Washington” co-panelist, syndicated columnist Mark Shields said that if in fact his prediction were true, the United States should only intervene if it is done the right way — with a declaration of war and a clear list of objectives.

“Let’s hope — Evan is rarely wrong — [that Evan] is wrong. But if in fact, we are about to embark upon that, let’s do it this time the right way, by a full and complete debate and a declaration of war, and a statement going in about what our objective is and what we are willing to do as a people, as a nation, a military, to achieve those ends, and when it will be over and how we will get out,” Shields said. “And that is what haunts us from all of these incursions and all of these expeditions.”

There is one and only one reason we pulled the US military out of Iraq. Iraq would not agree to the provision under the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) that makes US forces immune to Iraqi prosecution that expires at the end of the year. This means Iraq wanted to prosecute US military personnel for crimes committed against Iraqi citizens and/or property under Iraqi law, in Iraqi courts and served in Iraqi prisons. No way...rightfully! The US rarely allows a host nation jurisdiction over US military. So the President takes credit for bringing home troops and ending the war (wrong) and the nut case Kranthammer says we should have left "residual" troops (also wrong). The fact is Iraq ended our "war" by refusing to continue the SOFA as written into the new year.

You are 100% correct. The problem is that most people see whatever they want to see instead of the truth

Hey Robin it is too bad I ran out of bullets at times. I was told my unit used too much ordnance by Iraqi leaders... Far as I am concerned I never had near enough.
      • greenpace 5 mths ago
I wonder why the Iraqi government made that move (sofa), they should have know this would happen, I guess they had plans of them own , like Saddam Hussein part 2, and could the US afford 3 full wars at once (Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan) that would be the Taliban and Quida dreams come true, extremely difficult decisions and very little room to get things right

Was there or was there not an agreement with Iraq to remove all combat troops by this date? I believe there was and Obama did so. End of story.
If Iraq can't keep their own act together after we threw billions of dollars and thousands of American lives at them why should we stay there and hold their hand?
Start paying America about 50 mil a day to protect them and we would have a good reason to go back. But not because some right wing pundit is trying to score points on Obama.

I LOVE how the Washington "elite" decide that we get to go fight another war then they mosey down to the watering hole safe in the knowledge that THEY will have to go or even give up anything. The next idiot on ANY news channel that suggests that we go to war should be forced to be on the first transport in, gun in hand!

Go ahead do ANOTHER war. Funny how these wars never bring back anything for our people but body bags and photo ops for politicians. Even the "barbarians" of old had enough sense to bring back treasure and secure resources for their people. We give these wars over to defense contractors , whom drain the publics money through them , placing our funds into private hands on the backs of OUR kids. Its a national disgrace to be at war with every other 3rd world backwater country thinking were real bad #$%$ operating in war zones equivalent to the stone age. All the while giving our combat infantry ROE's that are the height of stupidity in a WAR zone. WAR should not be about a nightly news headline , WAR is WAR , EVERYONE dies. It should be HORRENDOUS and TERRIFYING in the extreme. It should be so horrifically violent that its stupidity stands out in contrast to normal human life , That is stands out as nothing but an instrument of pure destruction - instead - we have sanitized war to the point that it is nothing more than a nightly news headline. Disgusting. If we goto war with iran - or any other nation for that matter - we should not even send troops in. Nuclear weapons should be the first weapons deployed FOLLOWED by combat troops who's only ROE is the complete extermination of all infrastructure and all life in their operational combat zone. Maybe then WAR would be something people thought LONG AND HARD over before engaging in.

We should have never been in Iraq,,however in certain situations as in world war 2 it helps stop crazy leaders such as Hitler which saves many lives, and I am only for a war now in Iran because their leader is not sane enough and hates to many people to have a weapon of mass destruction. He would use it to bully anyone when he doesn't get his way. And we would stand with Israel and Russia is making their own war by giving Iran the means to make the bomb, they will also crumble at the hands of their leader. So I agree we will go in sooner than later because Israel will not tolerate to much holding off by the United States for election day when Israel has more to lose than anyone..
      • Stephen 5 mths ago
Have you ever read any history? Do you know, for example, WHY Iran has a crazy leader and went back to rule by the Immams? It was precisely BECAUSE we imposed a leader on them that WE controlled. Blowback, my friend, blowback. We see in the "Arab Spring" revolts the development of greater Islamist power in the region because they are fed up with our meddling. Ron Paul is right on this subject.

Do this gentleman is aware that Russia and China exist, and that they are talking about intervention too, I am not expert but seem to be that I am right more than this experts are, and scary situation is a deep under statement. I have a question WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN WHEN RUSSIA AND OR CHINA GET INVOLVED ON IRAN SIDE?
    • Mark  •  5 mths ago
Krauthammer, what a neocon propagandist. It would not surprise me if the civil unrest in this religous civil war between Shia and Sunnis gets worse. You can bet the radical Wahabist types, al-Quida etal, are going to do their best to foment this. Isreal and teh Paestinians both will ahve to duck to avoid being caught in teh crossfire. All this interventionist crap is just that. Go back in history and study the wars and persecutions jsut before and after the Reformation if you want a model for this.

Krauthammer's a flatulent JOKE! This withdrawal was negotiated by the Bush admin and the Obama admin had spent months practically groveling to the Iraqis urging them to "request" the retention of a residual force. The Iraqis decided against this. So, where in all of this is it "a failure" of the Obama admin? Why didn't the sauerkraut raise this "unrighteous" indignation when Bush put this arrangement in place or wasn't that arrangement, in his estimation, the source of the failure itself? Did he expect Obama to override the decision of the Iraqi govt and insist on a military presence? This is just the sauerkraut being a sauerkraut.

The National Defense Authorization Act allows the U.S. Military to pick up and hold any American citizen indefinitely without rights. If you plan on dissenting watch out how you do it folks. You may be on their "Terror" watch.

Krauthammer as usual is wrong . We tried to negotiate a further prescence in Iraq , but Iraq (being a now independent country) would have none of it . What did he expect us to do ? We would have had to occupy by force again , and we all saw how well that went the first time .
    • Jesus was a Yogi  •  5 mths ago
No"WMD's" in Iraq were there? But yet these same Morons are going to try and convince the GULLIBLE Sheeple that Iran had Nukes now? What a joke. How about paying attention to what's happening in the Good Ole U.S. of A. these days?
    • The AntiSheep  •  5 mths ago
Iranian Nukes are not the reason for this hogwash -- The Strait of Hormuz is the reason -- Somewhere you have some Zbigniew Brzezinsk type character looking at his Grand Chessboard, thinking that it will never do to give Iran the ability to shut down 1/3 of the World's Oil in the event of an attack by the US or Israel --- this does not sit well with your average Technocrat Control Freak -- but perhaps if they studied their board further, they might look at Iran's borders to the north and realize that it would be more cost effective to have come up with an alternative means of routing this Oil -- but I guess Russia still figures into this Chess Game, so maintaining this tension keeps the Dagger pointed at Russia, where perhaps lies the Check and Mate in these Warmongering Idiot's minds.

Maybe our objective could be: "Let's not kill 250,000 innocent civilians and leave the country in chaos far worse than it ever was in the first place". Then we just have to figure out how to do that. Of course, maybe our objective SHOULD be: "Let's not violate international law by attacking a country that has not attacked us".
    • Bob  •  5 mths ago
There IS a "residual force" in the country. Thing is, they can't be at every square inch watching over every single yahoo with fireworks and an ax to grind. Besides, they were doing this crap almost every day back in 2005 and 2006 with over 100,000 soldiers already there. Not to mention I'm sure just about every good soldier who's done his duty over there ten times more than he should have would probably say, "We tried...they don't want it, so let 'em light each other up".
    • Yus  •  5 mths ago
IRAN might not have the nuclear weapons yet but CHINA and RUSSIA have all lined up.These two big giants are the biggest losers.if the oil stop flowing through their pipe lines.IRAN had sign a military pact with both of them.BRACE UP FOR 3RD WORLD WAR.
