Despite criticism with Apple's new Maps app, the publication -- which has railed previous models of the iPhone in the past -- gave the iPhone 5 rave reviews. Among the features to receive high praise include its larger 4-inch display, LTE connectivity, lighter frame and camera capabilities. It also applauded big improvements made to Siri.

In 2010, Consumer Reports did not recommend the iPhone 4 to consumers based on the device's antenna problem. In fact, it suggested consumers opt for the older 3GS model. But the company switched its sentiment for the iPhone 4S, saying it didn't experience the same issues with weak reception.
Although Consumer Reports said the Maps app on the iPhone 5 "lacks the details, traffic data and customization options" offered by the previous Google Maps app, it described the app as "relatively streamlined" with guidance related to voice and on-screen directions.
