Everyone Is A Little Confused About Where This Sharp-Toothed Fish Is From

This fierce-looking beast was discovered by a Chinese fisherman – but no one quite knows what it is.

The sharp-toothed fish was retrieved from the water by an angler who said he’d never seen anything like it in his 20 years of fishing.

Liang, from Hongwei Village in Jiangmen, a city in China’s southern Guangdong Province, is hoping experts can shed some light on it.

The fisherman said he and his friends were fishing in Xi River – a tributary of the Pearl River – when he caught the animal.

The fish, measuring 75 centimetres (two feet five inches), has long dark green body with a white belly and long mouth with razor-sharp teeth inside.

Liang said he felt something heavy in his net and hauled the catch up, unexpectedly seeing the large fish, which his friends believe may be part of the gar pike family.

Mystery solved?

The fish is probably part of the gar pike family (CEN)

Not really: the gar pike is native to South America – so would be a long way from home.

The question now is to eat or not to eat. Liang is erring on the side of caution – but doesn’t want to sell it in case it is indeed a rare species.

Reports suggested that the garpike-like fish is most likely an invasive predator species, possibly introduced to the waters of China by fishermen returning from international fisheries around the world.
