What’s Thanksgiving like when you’re a superstar? For Sarah Michelle Gellar, it’s all about the food and family.

Gellar was known for slaying vampires in the ‘90s, but has since taken on other challenges, like running a company and raising two kids to be adventurous eaters. In October, she launched Foodstirs, a culinary lifestyle brand that aims to bring families together in the kitchen. Alongside fellow co-founders Galit Laibow and Gia Russo, she hopes to inspire more kids to start cooking with their parents at an early age.

It should come as no surprise then that Thanksgiving is one of Gellar’s favorite holidays — and prepping is indeed a family affair at her house. We caught up with her to find out her favorite sides and leftovers secrets, as well as what she is thankful for this year.

How does your family celebrate Thanksgiving?

It’s one of our favorite times of the year, when we all slow down and really get to spend time together as a family. Starting from when I was a child, and now with my own family, I have always had an open-door Thanksgiving. Not everyone has the time or money to be able to go to their own home for the holiday, and I want everyone to always feel like they have a place to be.

What is your Thanksgiving dinner game plan?

Eat, eat, and then eat some more!! And then maybe eat a little.

How do you keep the kids entertained while making dinner?

That’s the easiest part — we make the kids part of the process. I have always believed the best way to get kids to be adventurous with food is to involve them in making it. As soon as our kids can stand up on their own, we put them to work in the kitchen (and they love it). It’s a great way to extend our time together.

What’s a family dish you couldn’t have Thanksgiving dinner without?

Stuffing!!!

Any picky eaters in the family? How do you make such a big dinner kid-friendly?

We don’t have picky eaters and we don’t consider it luck. We have seen firsthand that by involving kids in everything from the shopping list to the end product, that they are excited to try all that is prepared.

How long do leftovers last in your house? Do you mix things up, eat the same thing all week, or are they gone before you have the chance?

Every year I wish we had more leftovers. My favorite is the next day to get fresh bagels and have turkey sandwiches. And I swear, mashed potatoes only get better.

Do you have any traditions or special decorating rituals with the kids?

We usually always do an art craft as well each year. This year we were thinking about making our own napkin rings.

What are you most thankful for this year?

As always, I am thankful for the health of my family and friends, but this year feels extra-special as I am entering such an exciting time. This has been quite the year — all the ups and downs (and ups) of launching a company — and I am extremely grateful for all the support I have received.
