Ex-bomb-sniffing dog caught after airport escape

ROMULUS, Mich. (AP) — Officials say a German Shepherd that formerly worked on bomb-sniffing duty in Washington, D.C., has been recaptured after escaping on arrival in the Detroit area.

WWJ-AM reports the dog named Arco ran away in Romulus after arriving Monday night on a cargo flight to Detroit Metropolitan Airport from Tucson, Ariz., and being let out of a crate to go to the bathroom.

Nadine Karsevar runs an organization that rehabilitates dogs and says the dog was making the trip to Michigan to a new home.

The Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press say police in the Detroit suburb recaptured the dog Tuesday. Arco bit two people and is being held for tests.

It's never a good idea to get aggressive with a frightened, confused dog. And who was the idiot who let him "go to the bathroom" without being on a leash?

Yeah, if I bit two people in Detroit, I'd want those tests also.

Dogs are very intuitive. He probably sensed where he was and thought: "People from Michigan retire to Texas or Florida or Arizona after making cars for a living. My reward after sniffing out BOMBS my whole life is getting sent to MICHIGAN? @#$% this...I'm OUTA here."

Even this loyal, hardworking dog deserves a better retirement compensation than our politicians. At least he was honest during 100% of his noble career :)

The dog probably ran because he had to ride in the CARGO hold of the plane. The conditions there are horrible--it is nothing less than animal cruelty to make them fly that way. I would escape too if given the chance.

I personally train service dogs and from personal experience. Police dogs are nothing more than a mirror image of their handlers....That's why 2 people got bit. If youre not wearing a uniform you are a potential "target".

@Lee -- As a fellow dog trainer, I feel qualified to weigh in on your comment.

Bomb sniffing dogs aren't "trained" to be aggressive. Their job is to sniff out bombs and ignore people and other distractions while they do it.

He bit people at the airport who were trying to "catch" him (and probably didn't know what the heck they were doing).

He was retired from being a bomb dog because he killed a cat.

The dog was highly stressed (flying cargo will do that to a dog) and was then taken out of his crate by a stranger, in a strange (and VERY noisy) place -- the whole situation was a train wreak from start to finish. I'm sure the airport employees were well meaning but it would have been better for all concerned, especially the dog, if they had left well enough alone.

OOPS, my bad. Another article said the dog WAS leashed, but "got away from the person". When I was training dogs I was able to leash train an Irish Wolfhound who weighed more than double what I did at the time. He neither "got away" nor "pulled me off my feet", though be tried to do both. But then, I knew what I was doing.

Well, the person may not have been familiar with dogs.
      • Marie 4 mths ago
@M -- My point was that a person who wasn't very familiar with dogs and how to handle them has no business taking any dog out of a crate in an unsecured area.

Said the dog to authorities, "You spend 10 years sniffing the butts that pass through here and see how it feels."

The dog probably has post-traumatic stress syndrome.

I'm surprised some drug kingpin didn't get a hold of the dog, to rip off other druggies...

Must have been a real crummy job. The dog couldn't run away fast enough.

"...escaping on arrival in the Detroit area" who wouldn't want to escape from DETROIT???? i don't blame the dog........

If my dog were to bite two people the government would put him down, but if a government dog bites two people, he gets tests to make sure he's okay.
