    Ex-champ Khan withdraws appeal of December loss

    NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Former light welterweight champion Amir Khan has withdrawn an appeal he filed after a split-decision loss last month.

    The matter was to be heard Wednesday in Newark by a three-member International Boxing Federation panel.

    But in an e-mail sent Tuesday night, Khan's camp said the appeal had been withdrawn and the hearing canceled. They didn't say what spurred the decision.

    Khan was challenging his loss to Lamont Peterson Dec. 10 in an IBF bout, claiming he was unfairly docked two points for pushing Peterson, but was granted a rematch by the WBA last week. Khan also implied fight judges may have been influenced by a "mystery man" seen sitting next to them at ringside.

    The man has been identified as Mustafa Ameen, who does outreach work for the boxing federation. He had been expected to appear in front of the panel.

    Khan's promoters said last week the rematch will be staged within 180 days.
