    Ex-police chief offended by suggestion police did little to find missing women

    VANCOUVER - A former chief of the Vancouver Police says he's offended by the suggestion police didn't try hard enough to find women missing from the city's Downtown Eastside two decades ago.

    Terry Blythe told the missing women inquiry in Vancouver the police force of the time had a good working relationship with the Downtown Eastside, and he worked extensively with the community.

    He says the department was trying hard to curb street violence in the area, but he also says the force was short 100 officers at the time of the investigation into missing women.

    Blythe says he never heard of Robert Pickton until after the serial killer was arrested in 2002, the same year that Blythe retired.

    Under questioning from his own lawyer, Blythe denied suggestions he has withheld any critical records from the inquiry or whether the commission is enabling a cover-up of the facts.

    The questions came after Cameron Ward, the lawyer for the families of 25 missing women, accused Vancouver police of withholding evidence crucial to the inquiry. (News1130,CKNW)
