Examination of iPad 3 Screen Reveals Retina Goodness

For months now, it has been a foregone conclusion that the iPad 3 will feature a high-resolution retina display. Now further evidence has surfaced, this time with an examination of one of the screens.

MacRumors obtained a display purported to be the same that will be used in the iPad 3. The panel appears to be the same physical size as the display used in the iPad 1 and iPad 2 but looking at the display under a microscope showed that its pixel density is double that of the older devices.

[More from Mashable: Chinese iPad Workers Get Third Raise Since 2010]

MacRumors wasn't able to power on the display, however its photographs compare the densities of the two screens. When comparing the same area on each screen, the older display shows a cluster of 4 pixels (2x2) while the new display is 16 pixels (4x4). That would mean the final resolution of the iPad 3 will be 2048x1536, twice the linear resolution of the iPad and iPad 2.

Application developers will need to convert or start creating new artwork for existing iPad apps with the retina display in mind. As with the iPhone 4, it might take a few months before existing titles get updated with new assets. For new developers, however, keep those vector files handy!

Frankly, I can't wait for a retina display iPad. The iPad 2 is an amazing device but when I switch between my iPhone 4S and the iPad, I instantly wish I could view text and graphics with the enhanced clarity of the iPhone.

The latest rumors have Apple announcing the iPad 3 at a press event in March. The new device is also rumored to have support for 4G LTE networks from Verizon and AT&T. Will you upgrade to a retina display iPad 3 or is standard resolution good enough? Let us know in the comments!

I'm sure the workers at Foxxcon are just THRILLED about your upcoming purchases.

Good job on the humanity, Applebots.

Nah. Only when they switch to next generation OLED display technology.
      • IAW94 3 mths ago
I know! OLED obviously seems like the way of the future.

Who cares about the iPad3? The iPad 2 is a great device, so I see no point for a 3rd generation Apple device right now. But, if you really want to get a device this year, wait till the Windows 8 tablets start coming out!

Yeah. The screen may support that high of a resolution... But what content will actually take advantage of such a high resolution? Its not like your 1080p movies will show in any higher of resolution than 1080p just because the screen is able to support higher... Granted the old Ipads could only support 720p.. But still.. What's the point of going so high? Its only a 10inch screen.. Unnecessary..

A faster processor is to upgrade for ... a "prettier" screen? —naah, I can pass this one up. Memory, speed, and software is where its at.

"Unconfirmed rumors and speculation regarding the iPad 3 include a new, speedy A6 processor, greater battery life, a faster graphics processor, more RAM, the 8-megapixel camera found on the iPhone 4S and support for 4G LTE service. Rumored software upgrades include support for the iPhone 4S talking application Siri and iOS 5.1 which will include Japanese Siri support, a new lock screen to get to the camera faster and a new permission setting that will block iOS apps from accessing a user’s address book." -- from DigitalTrends/Yahoo!

        You're welcome.

A screen resolution of 2048x1536 can display HD movies at 1920 x 1080 with room left over for other information to be displayed.

"Frankly"? Why do you idiot writers use this phrase. Are you only frank sometimes? So you're being frank now, but sometime you aren't being frank? Or you're not always frank and just decided to be frank for this article? Why don't you be frank ALL the time?

I'm just curious... Are all the people buying a new iphone, ipod, ipad, or any other new apple product as soon as it comes out, even if you don't need it, the same people who are #$%$ about the economy, price of gas, etc?? If you can afford to pay $1,000+ per year for new gadgets, then you can put gas in your car, make your house payments/rent, etc.I just think it's crazy seeing people talking and texting on their brand new smart phone while waiting in line for their welfare check...

Yup, I'll be upgrading to an iPad3 if it has the retina display. It will make the device a much better e-reader. Anyone need a slightly-used Nook?

I held off from the iPad 2 because it didn't have the retinal display, USB, 4G, or larger capacity. I expect retinal display with hopefully 2 or 3 of these additional features to be added. That'll be enough for me to make the jump from my 1st gen.

Why is a screen resolution of 2048x1536 even necessary?

Unless it has a quad core processor and vacuum attachments, I'm staying with my iPad2 for now....

Wait, you really see a difference when you go from iPhone 4s to iPad 2? I personally have the iPad 2 and an iPhone 4, and I can honestly say that there is no difference to the naked eye. I would like to think that I even have a trained eye when it comes to this sort of thing because of my background in film and video. I don't wear glasses and have perfect 20/20 vision. But maybe you're seeing something I'm not?

The only thing I have noticed is that I tend to hold the iphone closer to my eyes than the iPad 2; and I can do so without seeing pixels per se. I also often view things on the iPad 2 more zoomed in, but I attribute both of these to the fact that the iPad 2 just has more screen real estate.

I jump between an iPhone 4, an iPad 2, and a 15" Macbook Pro from 2008. All of the screens look about the same to my eye when it comes to displaying text, pictures, and video. The only difference is the size of screen and my eye's relation to it. I think displays (and particularly Apple's displays) are already as good as they can get. But maybe I'm wrong.
