Exotic Pets Are Dangerous to Health

The ownership of exotic pets poses a danger to human health, advocates say, and the recent incident in Zanesville, Ohio, highlights the need for strict laws to ban the possession of these animals by ordinary citizens.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich signed an executive order this afternoon cracking down on unlicensed exotic animal auctions, following Tuesday's (Oct. 18) incident in which Terry Thompson, of Zanesville, set loose his menagerie of lions, tigers, bears, monkeys and other animals from their cages before committing suicide. Authorities had little choice but to shoot and kill nearly 50 of the untamed animals before they injured people.

Born Free USA, a nonprofit advocacy organization that strives to end the ownership of wild animals, has documented some 1,500 attacks, escapes and other incidents involving exotic pets since 1990. The organization collects data on where each incident occurred, the type of animal involved and the fate of the animal (whether it was transferred to a zoo, euthanized or returned to its owner).

Born Free has documented 75 human deaths since it began collecting data. But this number and the number of attacks are likely underestimates, the organization said, because it relies on local and national news reports.

Besides deaths and injuries, there's also a chance these animals will transmit deadly infections to humans.

"It's not just about bites, scratches or mauling," said Adam Roberts, executive vice president at Born Free USA. "It's also about disease." Reptiles can carry salmonella bacteria, and monkeys can carry the herpes B virus, both of which can be deadly in humans.

Though he had not yet seen the text of Kasich's order, Roberts said, "It's not just about the auctions and people who sell these animals, it's about the people who keep these animals."

"Nobody should have wild animals," he said. "It's just not worth the risk."

    Animal attacks

Born Free's database is full of horrible and bizarre events involving exotic pets. On Sunday (Oct. 16), a 4-year-old boy in Texas was mauled by a pet mountain lion kept by his aunt, and hospitalized for his injuries. In September, an 80-year-old man in Ohio was attacked by a 200-pound kangaroo at an exotic animal farm. And in June, a Nebraska man in his 30s was strangled to death by his pet boa constrictor.

Over the last two decades, the number of attacks from exotic pets has been stable, Roberts said. But it's likely that more people are keeping wild animals as pets today than previously because the animals have become easier to acquire, Roberts said.

Monkeys and other primates are more dangerous to people than other exotic pets because of their tendency to bite and scratch, Roberts said. Exotic snakes and reptiles are also particularly dangerous. Born Free has tracked 443 incidents involving exotic reptiles since 1990, the most of any animal group.

Turtles, snakes and other reptiles can be carriers of salmonella. Born Free's database lists eight cases in which young children fell ill after contracting salmonella from an exotic reptile pet. Another case of disease transmission involved a 37-year-old man who contracted the fungal disease blastomycosis after being bitten by his pet kinkajou, a rainforest mammal related to the raccoon.

Opponents argue these pets offer companionship, and the right to own them should not be restricted. "Most of these fatalities are owners, family members, friends and trainers voluntarily on the property where the animals were kept," said Zuzana Kukol, co-founder and president of Responsible Exotic Animals Ownership, or REXANO, a nonprofit organization committed to protecting the rights of animal owners. "These were voluntarily accepted hazards, not a public safety issue."

Owners should take responsibility to properly care for and house their pets, REXANO says. Bans may increase the number of illegal animals and contribute to the number of animals in need of a home, the organization says.

    Loose laws

Just what type of wild animal can be kept as a pet varies depending on where you live. Some states, including Iowa and Massachusetts, completely ban the keeping of exotic pets. Some states require owners to have a permit. And others, including Ohio, have little to no regulation at all, Roberts said.

Ohio has seen 86 incidents involving exotic pets over the last two decades, according to Born Free. The state ranks second in terms of the number of incidents that occur per capita (Florida has the most incidents of any state, many involving snakes).

But even states with strict laws, such as California, can have a large number of cases because people break the law, Roberts said.

To find out whether there are exotic animals in your neighborhood or town, Roberts recommended contacting your local law enforcement officials or Born Free, and asking if there are any known wild animal keepers or breeders in the area.

Pass it on: Exotic pets are not safe and should not be kept in homes, advocates say.

I have kept frogs for 10 years. I have not gotten salmonella yet. This is utter garbage.

Frogs are fun we kept them back in Maine, had a lot of local ones, never got sick. We use to catch them out a local lake and bring them home to our pond, fun to watch. We caught grasshoppers for them to eat. Simple joys

I have always had snakes since the age of 6 and am now 53 ( large-18 footer to small, hot & non-venomous) and have never had slamonella, nor any problem with a snake that was not of my own fault. I presentl own a 3 year old Mckenzie Valley Wolf who is more predictable & loyal than any other dog I have ever owned. You just have to be a responsible pet owner & not some stupid, ignorant hill jack that does not know a thing.

What's with all this chatter about having wild animal as pets being dangerous? Just look at all of these wild, untamed children who grow into dangerous adults. They kill and destroy more lives than ANY animals. Leave animals alone and keep them behind bars.

This is utter garbage. 75 deaths in 21 years? wow....thats like a really low number. Lets put it to comparison to other peoples chosen hobbies, such as mountain biking. Last year alone 27 people were killed and hundreds suffered various injuries from a bicycle!! Should we ban those?? Boating and Fishing enthusiast aslo had higher numbers of deaths and injuries in the last 2-3 years alone than the last 21 for exotic animals. Lets think about it people...there are many many things in our lives that injure and kill way more people than exotic animals EVER could, and yet no one is saying anything about them. Why is that??? Is there some hidden agenda behind all this negative publicity? I believe there is...

60 folks get hit by lightning EVERY year! Lets ban it too, huh.

The man committed suicide because the town harassed him with legal issues. The expense took away his income and led to the death of many endangered animals. Some that were killed have less than 3,000 left in the world. The idiots in our town even regulate puppy litters. It is illegal to have a pregnant dog in our town. There was a black panther that got loose years ago and the police said to "call back" if it was seen again. Big Heroes!

Abbie...you had me until your last sentence. Let me help you. Do you agree that there are more people who DO NOT understand your snake ownership, than people that do? Well, there are many more that dont understand that. (I do, because my kids each have a boa constrictor and Arizona Mountain Kingsnakes. ALL are harmless. Killers, like 20' Anaconda's, Rock Pythons or Reticulated Pythons, NO ONE SHOULD OWN because no one person on earth could protect themselves if need be on something that grows past 10'.

So keep in mind the word "understand", before you rattle off how no one should own a monkey, and realize its just yourself being prejudice about something YOU dont understand. Just like I dont understand my sister coming home from work, to her $1.5 million dollar home, and she drinks 2 glasses of wine in front of her kids to wind down. I dont understand my friend, who smokes half a pack a day, a few of which his little kids watch and learn from. I DONT UNDERSTAND THAT behavior. But should I ask the government to ban ownership of wine and cigarettes? This is America. Youre not going to agree with other people wishes very often in life.

I owned a Capuchin Monkey for 20 years, right from it's 2nd day of birth. She was one of our family. She went to the bathroon in the toilet. We lived in a very exclusive neighborhood and everyone loved her. She NEVER bit a soul. If we were out at a park, beach, anywhere in public, people ran TO us. But if you had you or I had the snakes out in public or at the beach, many people would RUN from it. So all Im saying, is what is great about America, and there isnt much it seems anymore, is we have CHOICES to say, do, and own, "almost" anything we want.... because we are all different, see things differently, can care for things differently, and have been exposed to things differently, different eyes are understanding things, differently.

As soon as the God Forsaken frickin local or National level GOVERNMENTS are involved in animal ownership, you can kiss your snakes goodbye babe. ALL the high and mighty goody twoshoes in office, watch their skin crawl, when they even hear the word snake, because they dont "understand" and appreciate them. They were raised by maids and servants. MAYBE they owned a Spaniel or Weimeriner, but they certainly had NO EXOTICS, for their polical friends to know were in their home when they came to visit. Dont EVER defend private ownership of anything, b4 it bites you in your own butt. PERMITS however, is how everything should be regulated. Dogs, cats, birds, snakes, exotics..... put chips in all animals. If they escape and cause harm, then the indivdual is held liable.

blah blah blah Rachael..... a little over 945,000 drivers have been killed on American roads, since 1990. And get this, 398,000 of the deaths were because of alcohol!!! So why arent you writing EXTREME articles on that? Why not make alcohol listed as a narcotic, and illegal w/o a prescription? Lobbyist JACK HANNA, who really speaks for all zoo's because they NEED people to go spend money at THEIR facilities, and Im SURE for his own egotistical reasons, is so irresponsible and wreckless on this story. Lets sensationalize it out of context a little more Jack SPOTLIGHT Hanna.

Jack Hanna himself could get depressed and suicidal, and let go all the animals in his own zoo too. He could release Tigers, Bears, DEADLY Green and Black Mamba's and some Cobras too. So, should we close all zoo's? Rachael, do you know the saying "guns dont kill people, people kill people....?" Why dont you educate yourself on how the entire animal world works, from someone elses perspective, other than self interest minded Jack Hannas?

I feel horrible the animals had to be put down. But of course, Jack had to BLOW UP the fact these "poor" little creatures "endangered." Endangered where Jack? Endangured in the wild!! THAT, means nothing, in the animal world of private breeders. There are SO MANY endangered Tigers, monkeys, snakes, birds, sea creaturs and everything else at zoo's and private trade, that almost all zoo's, wont breed them!! Thats right people. They need some babies to keep selling admission tickets. But they give the "endangered" little creatures, norplant birth control and males get neutured all the time!!!!!!!!!

If private ownership and breeding were NOT done, then "endangered" animals would become extinct in the wild, FAST, like the Vietnemese Rhino did yesterday. Why, do you ask? Because the demand for the animals will NEVER EVER EVER EVER go away to many people. EVER! By having ways to legally obtain these animals from captive breeders, there is NO money for the poachers to capture wild ones. No one in the private market, would take a disease ridden wild caught animal, over a captive bred, 4th-5th generation more docile animal. The tougher new laws make it on owning an animal, the more people will pay for the poaching of them from the wild!!! Are you readers and journalists this stupid? Seriously?

Outlaw dogs that bite kids and maul their owners....outlaw guns and alcohol and vehicles. Outlaw your xanex, valium, prozac, and zoloff while your at it, because people have done crazy stuff on those meds. Oh yeah, outlaw cigarettes and candles too, because they burn houses down and kill more people that exotic animals!!!!!!!!!!!!

All thats needed are permits! PERIOD! Permits wont be issued, unless there is someone to go verify the owners comply with education, safety and housing. Obviously, no permit will be given for a Lion or Elephant, in a residential neighborhood. GET REAL FOLKS!!!!!!

The breeding of endangered species in captivity is more complex than you've made it out to sound. Unrestricted breeding has produced tens of thousands of tigers, most of whom are severely inbred. The wild population is much more genetically diverse, but its numbers are very few. Many genes will be lost forever if we depend on the unrestricted and irresponsible breeding that goes on in private collections. Zoos involved in species survival plans are attempting to reverse that, by keeping studbooks and trying to maintain as healthy a genetic stock as possible, in the event that the wild populations perish altogether, and sometimes even with an eye towards release. But it has to be done very carefully. Unrestricted breeding has not actually protected wild stocks; in fact, people seem even more blase about taking them from the wild, on the basis that if there are so many in captivity, they must not really be endangered. By your logic, tigers should not be endangered anymore, because there should be none taken fromt he wild when there are captive animals available. Unfortunately, that's not how it ends up working -- after all, wild animals are *free* to poachers. Captive-bred animals cost money.

I do agree, though, that what we need are permitsi. No one should be allowed to own a wild animal without a permit, and the permitting process needs to ensure that there is proper education, that the animal's basic needs are being attended to, and that there will be no threat to the general public. Unfortunately, not enough states do that. Ohio doesn't.

      This should be common sense.
A tiger, bear, wolf, or any other exotic animal is NOT a pet. It is a wild animal.
    • De  •  6 mths ago
People complain of too many laws. I agree; however, common sense is a thing of the past. So many people don't have common sense, compassion or wisdom and they do things that are totally unacceptable to humans and other animals. Having exotic pets should not be allowed or accepted. Since we don't live in a perfect world with mindful people we need to regulate certain behaviors.

Well, what animals are considered exotic? Many people feel that snakes, whether they originate in your area or not, are exotic pets. But my husband and I own 3 snakes and we have more potentially dangerous health risks from our house cats! On the other hand, I do agree that big cats, monkeys, and the like do not make good pets, and should not be allowed to be kept as pets by ordinary citizens.
