Exotic Pets Turn Invasive, Threatening Florida

Florida is now officially the world capital for invasive and potentially invasive reptiles and amphibians, according to a 20-year study verifying that 56 non-native species of these animals have become established in the sunshine state.

The accommodating climate — which can suit not only tropical and subtropical specie, but those adapted to colder climes —is an element in the problem, according to Kenneth Krysko, the lead researcher and a senior biological scientist at the Florida Museum of Natural History, the University of Florida.

But he and the other researchers put the bulk of the blame on the pet trade, which they say is responsible for the vast majority of introductions, and impotent laws meant to prevent the release of non-natives. [Image Gallery: Invasive Species]

It's impossible to have this many non-native species establishing themselves without consequences, Krysko said.

"To think we are not going to have any problem, it doesn't make any sense — we already know we have a problem with some of the few species we have studied, and sometimes it takes decades to even determine we have a problem with a certain species," he said.

One of the most prominent of these new residents is the Burmese python, which appears to be a refugee of the pet trade. Officials worry they pose a threat to humans, as well as to native, endangered species, which turn up in the pythons' stomachs.

According to the researchers' list, the Burmese is one of six python species that have been introduced to Florida, all by the pet trade, and one of two that has become established, meaning it has survived and reproduced in its new habitat.

The introductions began in 1863 with the greenhouse frog, a native of the Caribbean, which appears to have hitched a ride with shipping cargo. Since then, 136 more non-natives have been introduced and three intercepted before they reached the wild,Krysko and his colleagues find. In the decades that followed, cargo stowaways were the dominant introductions. But in the 1970s and 1980s, the demand for exotic pets increased. The pet trade is now accountable for 84 percent of introductions, they calculate. [America's 10 Favorite Pets]

The researchers confirmed the introductions of all known nonnative reptiles and amphibians through their own fieldwork and by looking at specimens in museum collections, photographs and results from previous research. For each, they included the time of its introduction, the pathway by which the species was introduced and its status.

Releasing a nonnative species without a permit is illegal in Florida, but the law requires an officer with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to observe someone releasing the animal in order to cite them, according to Krysko. Not surprisingly, no one has been prosecuted, he said.

In a study published in the journal Zootaxa on Sept. 15, the researchers encourage the creation of an early detection and rapid response program to quickly identify newly found introduced species so they can be eradicated.

Im seriously considering moving to Florida Lakeland area. Ive always wanted to live in the gator state and all the other big reptiles are like icing on the cake. Sucks that its happening might as well check it out

Part of the problem is people who are unaware as to how big these large snakes get. They see them as 18-inch long babies in the pet stores not realizing that in a few years time it'll be big enough to swallow a small child and they don't want to buy it a bigger enclosure. Then they release them into the wild and with the weather here being similar to their native habitat, they begin breeding.

Thanks to the judiciary, this has occurred. Everyone has rights - rights to whatever he or she wants as long as it bothers no one else. Plan a rally to rid the state of the invaders, and the judiciary will block that action.

Snake skin boots anybody. Real cheap!!! How about a python taco. Let us turn lemons into lemonade.

There is not much hat can be done about these invasive species, and Florida is now a huge ecological 'experiment' with more species getting thrown into the mix every day. One thing that might slow down the pythons a bit is to issue licenses for trappers to supply the trade for snakeskin hides for boots, handbags, shoes, wallets, etc.At one time, the alligator was almost wiped out because of it, and it seems to me if enough 'enthusiasm' is generated to go after them, they can be significantly reduced as a result. Maybe if the fashion designers were suitably 'encouraged' as well to FEATURE stuff made out of python skins, that might push up the demand (of course, the PETA people will hate it, but too bad!).

I'd be okay with that except that trapping is fairly indiscriminate; is it possible to could get harvesting up to extinction levels without wiping out threatened native reptile populations?

The author seems to have left out an important fact-during Hurricane Andrew a herpitarium in South Florida was destroyed releasing a large number of non native species including the pythons, river monitors and other non-reptiles, none of which were recovered. Scientists have proven a large number of these reptiles are part of the invasive species problem in Florida in addition to owners of exotic pets.

That's interesting to consider. As if the problem wasn't bad enough already.

The article didn't list everything the study did; that's one of the weaknesses of science reporting in the popular press. Accidental releases are definitely one source of invasive animals. In fact, there's a particularly large population around Miami Dade not because of intentional releases but because that's where most of these pets enter the nation on cargo flights. Some of them escape from their crates.

Humans; The original invasive species............. Quit trying to be something you are not.......... Eat meat, lots of meat.....................

20 years doing a study is 20 years that could have been spent killing off these foreign invaders.
      • Kirstin 7 mths ago
They *have* been trying to kill them off. They need more information to find a way that will actually work, and that is why studies like this are very important.

Easy to fix. Ban the importation of any animal or plant. Allow hunters in Florida to go after these monsters year around. I wonder about chicken friend python?
    • Lca  •  8 mths ago
this is why owning those things should be outlawed! what kind of idiot keeps a huge python around???
      • Eric1 8 mths ago
That's kinda the problem. They buy a SMALL python, and then it gets too big to handle, so they just dump it the swamp....

What ever happened to people being happy with a cat or a dog? With all those cats and dogs that are unwanted and being gassed to death in so called animal shelters, it's doubly criminal that people bring alien species such as Burmese Pythons that are dangerous to human as well as animal life.

Some people prefer animals that do not bark. Or maybe they just like reptiles as well as the little furry animals. Either way, it is not fair to lump responsible pet owners in with the idiots who release non-native animals into the wild...even if you may not like snakes.

Why not start a big hunt for all those invasive species. I suppose that in a few weeks we could wipe out a few of the less established invasives like the East Germans did with the Bison on the Fischland Darß back in the days before the wall fell. The Bison had been introduced to the area by Goering who was an avid huntsman. Within decades, from a few bison the population had exploded to a more than a hundred forming a number of small herds numbering a dozen or so individuals each. Thundering around on the Darß, they were soon a big pest, destroying fencing and farmland. Finally a number of hunters got together and organized a big drive. By the end of that hunt, every last one of those bison was dead, even the little ones. Problem was solved.

Florida sucks. The state was such an embarrassment in the 2000 election!
    • vyAhRtis  •  8 mths ago
Most of these invasive species are smarter than the rednecks that live there, and potentially more useful.

The nonnative species we have in the White House and the ones coming from Mexico is our biggest threat right now.

Yup importing of plants/animals way more harmful than "drill here drill now".
