What to expect on final season of "Boardwalk Empire"

Nucky and the gang are back for their last act.

Steve Buscemi and his fellow "Boardwalk Empire" co-stars hit the New York red carpet Wednesday night to celebrate the launch of the fifth and final season of the award-winning crime drama series.

Many in attendance described the occasion as bittersweet, for it was undoubtedly one of the last times cast and crew would all be assembled together (shooting on the final installment of the eight-episode season, and the series as a whole, has already been completed).

"Of course, it's sad, but I'm also happy with all the work that we did and I'm very proud of the work and it's just great to see everybody here," Buscemi told CBS News on the red carpet.

Buscemi has garnered strong critical acclaim as main character Enoch "Nucky" Thompson -- a 1920s bootlegging gangster and local Atlantic City, New Jersey, politician.

The actor has garnered three Emmy nominations for his performance since the show first premiered in 2010. He also scored a best actor Golden Globe in 2011 -- the same year the show won for best drama.

The "Boardwalk Empire" season 5 timeline will pick up in 1931 (seven years after the events of the season 4 finale), as prohibition comes to an end. There will also be plenty of flashbacks to Nucky's youth in the 1890s, where we'll get to see how he would eventually become the ruthless crime kingpin we've come to know.

"I think this season, Nucky takes a little bit of a look inward," Buscemi revealed.

The actor also disclosed that all bets are off when comes to the fate of the characters, including his own, in these final eight episodes.

Buscemi will also be featured on this weekend's edition of "CBS Sunday Morning."
