Expected $4 gas by spring could hamper SC tourism

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — While an improving economy would seem to be good news for South Carolina's $14 billion tourism industry encouraging more people to travel, it's shadowed by rapidly rising gas prices that could hit $4 a gallon in as soon as six weeks.

"The indications are that $4 a gallon is very, very realistic. And at this pace it's going to hit sometime in April," warned Tom Crosby, a spokesman for the AAA Carolinas based in Charlotte, N.C.

Such a price would approach the record high in South Carolina set in September of 2008 when gas hit $4.12 a gallon.

This weekend is the unofficial opening of the spring tourism season on the South Carolina coast. Thousands of people were in Charleston for the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition that features, among other things, wildlife art, sporting dog competitions and cooking demonstrations.

The outlook for the coming tourism season will be discussed when the Governor's Conference on Travel and Tourism opens Monday in Greenville. Governor Nikki Haley will be among those addressing representatives of the tourism industry, which is one of the state's biggest.

"Gas is always scary but it's something we can't control so I don't intend to focus on it too much," said Duane Parrish, the director of the state Department of Parks Recreation and Tourism. "South Carolina is primarily a drive market and roughly 80 percent of the people who come into the state come in by car, so gas does have an impact."

Parrish said there are enough large cities near the state — Atlanta, Charlotte and Raleigh — that people will still visit despite rising gas prices.

"Even in bad times when gas prices are high, people still have the urge to travel. They may just not go as far, spend as much or stay as long," he said.

Charlie Clark, a spokeswoman for the Hilton Head Island Chamber of Commerce agreed.

"What we find is that as gas prices rise, it doesn't impact people's plans to get here but it can impact their plans for what they do when they get here," she said. "That means they may be going out to dinner a little less or playing one round of golf instead of two."

Brad Dean, the president and CEO of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, said the thousands of rooms at the beach help keep rates down below the national average.

"I wouldn't say we'll benefit directly but being an affordable market, the consumer may look to come here to save money," he said.

Parrish added that in some ways, higher gas could work in South Carolina's favor, with visitors who might have headed south to Florida deciding to save some money on gas and vacationing here instead.

Parrish and others expect tourism to be up this year, despite the uncertainty about gas.

"There's a lot of pent-up demand," he said. "People who couldn't take a vacation the last couple of years, all of a sudden cabin fever has set in and they need to go somewhere."

We're expecting a definite improvement over last year, even if it's only 2 to 3 percent," Crosby said.

Crosby noted that, on Feb. 1 last year, gas in South Carolina was just under $3 a gallon. By April 1, it had jumped to $3.62. This year on Feb. 1 gas was $3.34 a gallon and a similar increase would mean a gas approaching $4 a gallon by April.

Prices increase in spring as refiners switch to more expensive anti-smog blends ahead of the summer driving season. This year, the easing of the European financial crisis is helping to increase demand and uncertainty about production in Iran could spike prices, Crosby said.

Gas costing $4 a gallon "is a reality check and people start changing their behaviors. We have never been able to live with $4 and when it gets to $4 demand started to slip and it helped force prices back down," he added.

"As much as the price of fuel is a relatively nominal part of a vacation in the whole scheme of things, it draws more attention because we see it every day going to and from work and the grocery store. It's on the minds of consumers throughout America," Dean said.

Memo to America......Stay home this summer. catch up on the Honey Doos you been putting off. Too many people at Disney Land anyway and the cost...? Whoof....! If ya must travel, take a train. Sure it takes longer but none of the hassel at the terminal like youd see at the airport. NASCAR events can be seen on the telly far better than they can in person and its cheaper. Grill out in the back yard a couple of times a week. Make love to your main squeeze in the kids tree house at midnight during a full moon, if ya be wanting a little adventure. Read some books, drink a few brews and chill out...And as Pop Schultze always used to growl....Save Your Money...When the demand dimishes, then prices will fall.......Basic Economics..Ya do not have to be a Harvard Grad to figure that one out do ya?

Here in CA, gas is already over $4.00 a gallon. I filled up last week in the morning before I went to work, and it was $3.75 a gallon. Passed the same station on my way home from work the same day and it had went up $.10 cents to $3.85 a gallon. Just the other day it jumped up $.15 cents in one day to $4.00 a gallon. Yesterday on my way home, its now $4.05 a gallon. And this is for regular unleaded, not the higher grade stuff. So its basically gone up $.30 some odd cents in a week. At this rate, it will be well over $5.00 a gallon by the time spring comes.

I paid $4.25 per gallon in California this morning... no need to speculate about $4 gas because it's already here. By summer some of us will be paying $5+ per gallon... not good news for President Obama in an election year.

Especially considering that most folks fail to grasp that neither he nor any president has a great impact on gasoline prices.

when will everyone wake up and realize that the USA is the THIRD leading producer of oil in the world, but its all exported so then we have to import 90%of oil from Canada, Mexico and Venezuela. less than 10% of our imported oil comes from the middle east. so its actually pretty simple. we dont necccessarily have to drill for more oil, we just need to keep American oil in America. Doesnt anyone else wonder why the presidents and CEO's of the major oil companies make MILLIONS a year in just salary and millions more from stock options, etc. now some guy somewhere says gas will be $4 a gal soon and it will be. Why dont he say gas should be $2.50 a gal????? because then the rich wont get richer. one more thing...no gas station should be allowed to raise prices at the pump after 5pm PST Friday till 8am PST on Mondays.

U.S. oil exports are up to 1.6 million barrels a day, according to a recent Reuters report.

We import something like 13 MMbbl (13 million barrels) daily. Exporting has to do with friendly relations with other countries and primarily geography. Easier to ship oil to Canada from the north than to ship it to southern U. S. Also, the US ships some "dirty oil," or oil that isn't clean enough for U.S. laws, to other countries who don't have as strict of laws.

After a bad huricane a profiteer was selling ice for 100 dollars a block. The sheriff here arrested him and gave his ice away. The same attitude and approach should be taken with oil corporations. If they cannot be reasonable and continue to act as greedy pigs then the resource- oil- should be nationalized. It is a national resource no different than water, so to take this as public property isnt that hard to do.

        great point and story

The oil companies are planting these stories so that people won't complain this summer when gas prices DO go up to $4+. They are conditioning us...

    • john  •  2 mths ago
Maybe since the people of South Carolina think so much of Newt Gingrich, they could persuade him to show Obama how to get the price down to $2.50.

I remember, with crystal clarity, in 2008 that according to barack obama the reason gas prices were so high was because george bush and dick c controlled the oil markets. so when obama took office in 2009 with a democratic controlled house and senate that prices would come down to like $2.00 a gallon. barack obama lied to us.

Most unfortunate that the price of gas is based upon the price of a barrel of oil. As long as the price of a barrel of oil is determined on the stock market by investors for the oil companies that answer to their stockholders and not the general public, the price will continue to increase until the next market crash, which at the current rate of growth, will happen soon.
    • Johnny Doe  •  3 mths ago
The oil companies want Obama out, so they are raising the prices. When they wanted Bush re-elected, they dropped the gas prices.
    • Lron  •  2 mths ago
Think about the US situation with respect to Gas prices.....who in Washington really give's a Toot about Gas prices and our Vacation plans? They all are rich and have said very little about how the Common folks feel about high prices and our bad economy!
