Hatshepsut was an amazing woman in a world of male power. It's remarkable that she held on to the throne as ruling Pharaoh (she wears a beard in some depictions), even though her brilliant stepson and legitimate Pharaoh Thutmose was a full-grown adult for much of that time. She was secure enough to make Thutmose commander of the army and still not be overthrown. Her 22-year reign was one of the most successful in Egyptian history.
