Face Transplant Patient Thanks Donor and Doctors & Releases Photo

Charla Nash, who received a full face transplant in late May of this year after she was mauled by a friend's chimpanzee in 2009, has released a photo and statement about her treatment.

Nash lost her hands, lips, nose and eyes in the attack, leaving her blind and disfigured. The transplant operation took 20 hours.

In her statement, Nash expressed gratitude to the family of the organ donor, who remains anonymous. She wrote:

These transplants could not have been possible without the generosity of a family unknown to me. They gave me a face and hands. I will now be able to do things I once took for granted. I will be able to smell. I will be able to eat normally. I will no longer be disfigured. I will have lips and will speak clearly once again. I will be able to kiss and hug loved ones. I am tremendously grateful to the donor and her family.

Nash also received a double hand transplant. However, Nash said she developed pneumonia, and because of the complications that ensued, the hands needed to be removed. [Photos of Nash before and after her transplant]

Nash thanked the medical professionals who treated her, writing:

Since February 16, 2009, I have been blessed to be in the care of many incredible doctors, nurses, and caregivers. These professionals first saved my life, then healed my wounds and strengthened me to face an uncertain future. They helped me adapt to a near impossible situation where I was unable to see, smell, and move with confidence without the use of hands. Finally, I was given the chance to restore most of what I lost by coming to Brigham and Women's Hospital. Here I received a new face and two hands that will allow me to be independent once again and able to be part of society. Losing the new hands is just a bump in the road of my recovery. I believe that one day I'll have two hands to help me live as a blind person with confidence.

I thank everyone who has helped me for these last two and a half years.

"It's wonderful to see how Charla’s recovery has progressed as she continues taking steps toward her new life," said Dr. Bohdan Pomahac, director of the BWH Plastic Surgery Transplantation Program, who led the face transplant operation.

The transplant was the third full face transplant performed at Brigham and Women's Hospital, in Boston and is only the second time that a face and double hand transplant has been attempted, the hospital said. The first was performed in France in 2009, but that patient died of a heart attack during a follow-up surgery.

Nash also thanked medical professionals at Stamford Hospital in Connecticut, who treated her immediately after the attack, and at the Cleveland Clinic, where she was treated for 16 months before her transfer to Boston.

Nash's statement in its entirety is posted on the hospitals website.

God bless Ms. Nash and those who helped her. Wild animals belong in the wild, period. There is no excuse for having an exotic "pet".

Where was God when the lady was attacked? Why do people credit God when good things happen but then forget to blame God when bad things happen?

Actually Danny, that is always a difficult question for many people. God first designed a perfect world without evil, however God did allow man free will because He wanted man to love Him of his own free will. Man chose to disobey God's commands thus allowing evil back in the world. It was evil that caused this tragedy, not God. Sometimes God allows these things to happen according to His Will, but we often don't know why. For instance, maybe this tragedy brought someone closer to Him during this time - we just don't know. However, do not make the mistake to blame God for causing this - He is not evil, but evil is in our world. God is loving and good.

All animals can maul. Even domesticated ones. I would never leave a large dog(s) around children. But people do it. It's utterly insane.

A large dog can go for a long time, seeming docile. Then in a split second, turn for no apparent reason. Then go docile again for a long time. But in that crazy moment, it could tear apart a small child.

Any animal with a brain that is biochemically controlled can turn on a dime. People do it all of the time. It's called a temper. When we get angry, we yell and throw things and...

        Dogs growl and bite.

That chimp didn't go crazy that chimp went chimp. Chimpanzees don't even belong in zoos let alone in captivity as "exotic pets"

More reasons to leave Chimps in the wild where they belong !

I do not wish to speak ill of the dead, as the friend who owned the chimp has since passed away from an aneurysm or something, but what kind of nut keeps a chimpanzee as a pet??!!! They are called wild animals for a reason.

The lack of respect so many people show before nature truly apalls me. These are wild animals-they were not put on this planet for our amusement. If they feel remotely threatened or hurt they will defend themselves by whatever means they have. A chimp is all the more dangerous because it has opposable thumbs and hence can grab and hold on for dear life, and because they are smart enough to know all the worst places to go for. That said, I do sympathize with this poor woman, it must have been a horrifying experience. I hope the surgery continues to go well and hope she can try to live a remotely normal life after this.

How many of you actually have enough courage to say the same thing to people's face that you spew on Yahoo! ?

My guess is next to none. Cowards.
      • B. 9 mths ago
I have no problem with that.
      • Big Sapelo 9 mths ago
I say it all the time. No problemo
      • B. 9 mths ago
Hey Biff, there are some of us real people out here, and yes we are worth our salt too. Do you know what that means?
    • pumpkin  •  9 mths ago
I feel so much for this woman, she has been thru pure hell that I don't think many of us could have survived. Her friend was a complete idiot to keep a male chimp as a pet. Unfortunately Charla had to pay for her friends incredible stupidity....Kudos to Charla !
      • JC 9 mths ago
She is a total IDIOT. How much did this all cost? In time and money? Why not just check out and save everyone the aggravation?
      • pumpkin 9 mths ago
KC....what a cruel comment !....don't you read things correctly ?
I said HER FRIEND WHO OWNED THE CHIMP WAS THE IDIOT, NOT THE VICTIM CHARLA.........so was Charla supposed to die to save "time and money" ?????????????
      • B 9 mths ago
JC, you are the IDIOT! You'd rather Charla check out of the hospital disfigured and unable to do anything, to save time and money? You are a total waste of a human being. You're not even worthy enough to be flies on shit!

It's getting so that these Yahoo comment boards are filled with so much trash talk and outright rude and ignorant comments that they're not worth reading or even having. Maybe Yahoo needs to just turn off all of them - it would save those of us with a modicum of intelligence (i.e., IQ greater than zero) from having to read the diatribes of the great unwashed, unlearned masses who seem to gravitate here.

      Never trust a chimp.
    • Xeon  •  9 mths ago
I saw a special on owning primates, can not remember it if was 60 Minutes or not. After watching it, I never think about owning one again. They are wild animals that can have the intelligence of a human child, are extremely strong, and often have bad tempers. Only professional should be allow to have them.

What an incrediblily brave young woman. Good luck, Charla and please remain optimistic. You people who feel the need to own an exotic pet, please reconsider. That cute little monkey is not the sweet "Cheeta" in a Tarzan Movie. When chimpanzees become adults, they turn into uncontrolable wild animals. And despite their size, they are far stronger than humans. Please just get a small house cat or dog.

I am beginning to think that Americans are not very bright. Going by this forum, most of them
seem incapable of making a comment on the news item, without bringing Obama into it.
Obama has nothing to do with the article, but these mentally slow people keep yapping
      about him.
    • Richard  •  9 mths ago
I just read a dozen or so of the comments and it makes me sick to see how nasty people can be. It is no wonder we are in the shape we are in and I don't see it getting better any time soon. Our society is very sick and the comments about this lady proves it.
    • mk  •  9 mths ago
political comments? seriously? Get over yourself, this has nothing to do with it. Good luck Charla
    • common man  •  9 mths ago
Glad she's doing better. The pain she must have gone through is unimaginable. Hope she has a smooth and happy life from now on. To the people keeping WILD animals as pets, YOU should be in prison!
    • AO  •  9 mths ago
What a horrible attack and such a brave lady. Chimps are highly dangerous animals and should never be kept in captivity except in zoos.
    • Cicero  •  9 mths ago
Let me point out that this article has nothing at all to do with: Reagan, Nixon, Obama, Kennedy, the Bible, evolution, creationism, or African Americans.
    • R.S.  •  9 mths ago
It is very unfortunate and tragic regarding the severe mauling of this woman. People are ignorant, careless, and unrealistic believing that their exotic pet is harmless. Wild animals have wild instincts and cannot be trusted. They aren't pets and should stay in the wild!
    • Prometheus  •  9 mths ago
I hope that somewhere there is a discussion/message board that isn't almost entirely dominated by freaking morons who regard every story -- not as an opportunity to learn from one another -- but as an opportunity to showcase ignorance, stupidity, and impertinence -- not to mention as an opportunity to slam Obama or Bush or one another. If all you are capable of doing is flicking snot at one another, just stay in your third-grade school yard.
