For some in need, Facebook is route to new kidney

SEATTLE (AP) — Here's another reason for holdouts to join the social media site Facebook: It's a great place to find a kidney.

Between the children's photos and reminiscences about high school, more and more pleas for help from people with failing kidneys are popping up. Facebook and other social media sites are quickly becoming a go-to place to find a generous person with a kidney to spare, according to the people asking for help and some national organizations that facilitate matches.

Damon Brown found a kidney on Facebook after telling his story on a special page the Seattle dad created under the name, "Damon Kidney." His friends and family forwarded the link to everyone they knew and on Jan. 3 a woman his wife has known for years, but not someone they consider a close family friend, will be giving him a kidney.

"She said it wasn't really for me. It was for my kids, because they deserve to have a dad around," said Brown, 38.

Brown's story is not unique, said April Paschke, a spokeswoman for the United Network for Organ Sharing, a private nonprofit organization that manages the nation's organ transplant system for the federal government.

"We see more and more people matched up by social media," she said. "It's an extension of the way we communicate. Before we found the Internet, people found other ways: through a church bulletin, word of mouth or an advertisement even."

This past year, a man in Michigan also found a kidney donor through Facebook, and a Florida woman found one through Craigslist.

Damon Brown admits he was a little embarrassed to ask for help so publicly. Except for telling close friends and family, the Seattle father of two young boys had been keeping his illness pretty quiet.

He was on the official transplant list and had started mobile dialysis through Northwest Kidney Centers but Brown was seeing his health deteriorate — he was constantly tired and achy. He couldn't sit on the bed to tell bedtime stories to 5-year-old Julian and 3-year-old Theo because he had to stay close to his dialysis machine.

"I'm a strong guy, but I would have to say, it's been rough this year," he said. Brown had put himself on the long wait list for a kidney from a deceased donor, knowing he would have to wait at least three years before he was called.

After one particularly difficult visit with his doctor, Damon and his wife, Bethany, decided to create the Facebook page, which has attracted more than 1,400 friends.

A few weeks ago, after the transplant was approved and scheduled, Brown posted the good news to his Facebook friends. More than 300 people responded: "Whoo hoo....what a great Christmas present," wrote Kelly L. Hallissey. "This is awesome!! Praying for you and your family for positive news and a great way to begin 2012!" wrote Brenda Tomtan.

Many people are not aware that kidney and liver donations can now come from living donors.

In 2010, 16,800 kidney transplants were performed in the United States, of which 6,277 came from living donors, according to the United Network for Organ Sharing. An average of 46 kidney transplants take place each day in this country, while another 13 people who have been waiting for a kidney die each day. About 90,000 are on the transplant list right now.

Jacqueline Ryall, 45, said she felt a need to donate a kidney to Brown to give back her own good health and all she has been given. She's not a mom and gushed about how beautiful Damon and Bethany's kids are.

"The real reason I'm doing this is he's got kids and he's a good guy," she said. "My life is in a good place. I've been given lots and I have a responsibility to give back."

Ryall said her elderly mother does not understand why she would give a kidney to someone other than her own brother and sister, and her family is worried about her health going forward.

After her own research, however, Ryall decided it's relatively safe for a woman in good health to donate a kidney. If something is going to go wrong with her own kidneys, she has heard they usually fail in twos.

"Right now it feels like absolutely the right thing to do," she said, adding that she hopes her decision will help make other people less afraid to do the same thing.

News media coverage of his quest flooded his hospital with so many requests for information — from total strangers — that Brown said he was asked to pull back on his publicity efforts. Four people passed the initial screening and came in for tests. Now that he sees a happy ending coming for himself, Brown would like to do whatever he can to help others.

April Capone, the previous mayor of East Haven, Connecticut, knows what Brown means about the attraction of happy endings.

Two years ago, she was sitting in her office checking her Facebook feed, when a post from one of her constituents popped up saying he needed a kidney.

"At that moment, Carlos was at Mayo, testing to get on the transplant list," said Capone, 36. "He really didn't tell anyone he was sick. The doctor said, 'if you don't do it, no one is going to know'." So Carlos Sanchez pulled out his cell phone and posted the request and Capone responded immediately.

"I knew from the second I saw his post that I was going to be a donor," said Capone, who barely knew Sanchez at the time. Now they're as close as siblings, talk on the phone almost daily and meet for lunch regularly.

Capone said she had no personal reason for donating a kidney; she just want to save a life.

"It was the best thing I ever did with my life," she said. "I wish I had more; I would do it again."

1991 I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and highblood pressure and 2001 with kidney disease. By december 2008 I had chronic kidney failure, and by december 2009 total kidney failure. I started dialysis and by september 2010 I became seriously ill with several infections all life threatening. I asked my 28yrs son if he would donate one of his and without hesitation he said yes. On 02/07/11 I had a transplant at Tampa General Hospital and we both have been fine ever since. He proposes us going to dinner on every aniversary and I have been going to the gym since october to celebrate the new me. Thank you my son Christopher Morgan.

Facebook saved my life in 2009. My wife posted that I needed a new kidney on Facebook, and her friend from high school responded and donated his kidney to me. There's no way I can thank him enough.

My niece ( who was three at the time) was giving a kidney by a 17 year old that had died in a car accident. The kidney only lasted about five years and the doctor told her mom she would have to get another. the doctor said it would be better if it was a live person. He said that was better than a dead donor. He also said it should come from a compatible relative. In January 2011 she got a kidney from her aunt. Lucky for her they were compatible as they were running out of relatives. She is doing wonderful now and starting to look great. Before the kidney transplant she looked like she was ready to die. I believe she was saved just in time. Not just anyone can be a donor you have to be compatible with the person. The problem with her aunt was that she needed to lose 100 pounds before they would do the operation but luckily she did it.

I'm amazed! This is a real story?
      • John 4 mths ago
I wouldn't say 'luckily' she did it, but rather 'luckily' she had an aunt who made multiple sacrifices and worked real hard to be able to save her niece's life. That woman deserves commendation in the highest regard.

I cannot believe these comments…you people are truly broken. My wife needed a kidney two years ago and neither I, nor anyone from my big family was a match. We got involved in a large Kidney exchange that took place at Georgetown University. There were 26 people involved (13 donors and 13 recipients). There were white people, black people, and Asian people. Race did not matter…what mattered was 13 people, including my wife, who were very close to dying, got another chance at life. My wife got a kidney from a black lady and my kidney went to a black lady. I will be thankful for the rest of my life for that black lady who gave me wife the gift of life, and the black lady who received my kidney is now like a sister to me. She has an awesome husband and three awesome kids who are glad to have her around for a long time. The only thing I can hope for is that all of you who posted such disgusting racial comments will soon have kidney failure, because then maybe, just maybe, you will see the errors of your ways. For those of wo who are donating or considering donating your kidney, I can tell you it was the best decision of my life and I am healthier now than I was before I donated.

A racist white man driving home drunk, from a party fell into a ditch on a rainy evening. Luckily for him however, his headlight was on that attracted the attention of a black motorist, who happened to be his despised neighbor. Fearfully, the neighbor, dialled 911 from his cellphone. Upon arrival of the police and ambulance, they rescued him and as quickly as he regained consciousness, seeing his once hated neighbor, grabbed his hands and whispered to please alert his family, to which the man honored. A week after his discharge from the hospital, he came home to his family happily announcing how kind the man was, despite his obvious hatred towards the man.

When his wife told him the full story, that the neighbor did not only broke the news to them, but also was the one that called 911 and reported his accident, he broke down further from the brokenness the wife expressed, and quickly, sent for the man. As the white man sighted his neighbor, he hugged, kissed him and confessed that the brother that he hated has saved his life. Till today, he became his brother. Thank goodness for life changing events!

I didn't see any liver donors, they are probably rare. There is a dire need for liver donors, a very vital organ that one cannot survive very long without, even a 'piece' of donated liver enhances ones life. Please look into this subject before you degrade and ridicule. God Speed!

These people making the snide remarks are ill informed. I work in a medical facility that does dialysis. For people who don't know, dialysis is the only thing that will keep someone alive until they receive a kidney or their time comes. This is a time consuming, costly, sometimes painful, and restrictive way to live. What a beautiful thing for someone to save a person from having to do this either 3 times a week for up to 6 hours at a time or daily if it is necessary. Please research more about transplantation before making such evil and uncaring remarks. God Bless You for donating and God Bless Damon for his gift. What a true blessing. Praying for a quick and healthful recovery for donor and receipient.

What a bunch of ignorant a holes,, my sister is the one giving her kidney to save a life and all you have to say is hateful comments? Jackie. I am proud of you and my prayers are with you and Damon.
    • kiara  •  4 mths ago
Some of you people are so ignorant. Way to show what mature adults you are. This is a happy story and all you guys can do is bring race into it. What if your child was white and needed a kidney and the only person they found to donate was a black woman? Would you say no and let your child die? All because their not white! PROBABLY NOT! Filter what you say. Cause ifs a life or death situation for a family member, friend etc. I dont think race would matter. You people are cold hearted and its you people who we should be ashamed of.

I lost my left kidney to cancer in 2006 . Now my Dr. tells me my right kidney isn`t working very well . Feel lousy all the time ,and my b/p keeps dropping to low . I know how important it is to have at least 1 healthy kidney.

Ah, so Facebook really is good for something (other than keeping up with all the family who live too #$%$ far away to go see).. This really is just a nice thing to read.. It's good to know that if I ever need a kidney, there could be some awesome person out there who would help out..On another note, I would like to say that some children who are mixed with white/ darker race, do come out just looking white (not that they do, the child he's holding looks like a very light skinned version of him).. People are just so stupid and quick to judge, as if they know.. My daughter is mixed (white/ Mexican) and she just looks white.. I also know kids who are half black with light skin, blonde hair, and blue eyes (the dad didn't believe the mother, either. But, he really couldn't argue with the positive DNA test)

I'm a 31yo, mom of a 5yo, and have been on dialysis for 3 years. On the transplant list for 3 also. This is great news! Through Facebook I also reconnected with a high school friend, who offered his kidney to me. I couldn't take it because I need a pancreas and kidney. Until you go through this or know somebody who does, you have NO clue about the day-to-day battles ESRD patients go through. And to the person preaching about money... Donors don't have to pay the hospitals and doctors, most of the time the person receiving the transplant pays the cost. Try to be more sensitive people.

In May of 2011 our precious great grand daughter was murdered by a very bad man. She was on life support for a few days and we made the difficult decission to remove her and donate her organs to help some one else. It was very hard on my grandson but he new it was the right choice and would help others live. We have heard back from 2 of the resipiantes and they are doing wonderful. We are glad that our little angel could make her 3 short years on this earth help others have a better life. R.I.P. Sophia Marie Acosta. Resting in the arms of Jesus
