Facebook Says 600,000 Accounts Compromised Per Day

In a blog entry on Thursday, Facebook stated that about 600,000 log-ins every day are compromised.

The factoid, first noted by security site Sophos, was in the context of an entry introducing new security features for the social network. The figure was extrapolated by a stat showing 0.06% of 1 billion logins per day are compromised. Less than 0.5% of Facebook users experience spam on any given day.

Facebook's proposed solution for such breaches is to find three to five trusted friends. That way, if you're locked out of your account, Facebook will send codes to your friends to give to you. Facebook is also testing app passwords that the company will generate on your behalf and you won't need to remember.

What do you think? Are you surprised at the extent of the breaches or does this seem low to you? Let us know in the comments.

If you are already signed in and you click something that asks you to sign in again...don't do it.

you are only as secure as your weakest user. 99% of these comprised accounts are due to the ignorance of the user as they put their password on a page because it simply looks like facebook or they use the same password on several sites, and one of the other sites is compromised. thousands of bank of america accounts are compromised each day as well, doesn't mean their system isn't secure.

Anyone who thinks it's okay to hack into anyones account, just because the security is lax, an idiot. It's not okay, it's not yours, so leave it alone.

Of course it's LOW. They will minimize as much as they can. I keep getting these stupid things that are later found to be viruses. I don't click on many things that take me to a weird sounding site. The latest is the pimple thing.

Facebook has been very slack when it comes to making sure their website is secure compared to how much they are doing to make sure people keep coming onto it. they need to stop changing the looks of the site and focus on the site security once and for all.

I Don't Consider it a LOW....Facebook is need of Secure Servers. Remember HOTMAIL hack was a problem ages back and they fixed it with Increasing the Encryption levels.

Easier just to dump your Facebook account.

You WILL survive without Farmville, or knowing when your friends brush their teeth.

I guess some people don't get facebook...reading some of the comments, for me anyway, it's not about forgoing being social with real people, it's not about being social with people I've never met, I have never played farmville or any of the games, it's about connecting with FAR away friends, reconnecting with friends and finding long lost friends!!! For me, it's been great having had to move so much and continue to move so much!!!

Don't use the apps. Everybody I know that's been hacked use the apps, those who don't use them have not been hacked.
    • robert  •  7 mths ago
Now I'm glad I don't have Facebook or Twitter.

It's not shocking that Facebook is getting hacked and accounts are getting compromised. It's the Internet. Anything popular will attract spammers, phishers, and those with ill intentions. No website is 100% secure unfortunately. Those that seek to do harm are always a step ahead. The bad part about Facebook is the amount of information that is posted there. It's pretty much the identity thief special. vr

I would never use Facebook. Big brother is watching you!

It's impossible for me to have my Facebook account compromised, because i don't have a gatdem Facebook account. What kind of Utopian society do we have that every citizen on this planet must have a Facebook account to socialize?
    • vanman3  •  Jasper, United States  •  6 mths ago
Dig this, My local newspaper, The Joplin Globe. Joplin MO. They just implemented a new policy. The ONLY way you can leave a comment on ANY story,,,editorials etc. Is you have to have a facebook account and use it to access their paper. I don't know but that sure sounds like it is coming close to a constitutional infringement. Freedom of the press? "I gotta have a facebook account to contact my local paper?????
    • JoeM  •  7 mths ago
Likely the same accounts are getting compromised over and over. Facebook users include some of the most security ignorant internet users. They click on spoof links, they reuse their Facebook passwords elsewhere, or they downloaded malware that contains a keylogger.
