ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — An attorney says the family of an unarmed man shot to death by police this weekend has filed a civil rights lawsuit seeking $50 million.
Lawyer James Rumm says the lawsuit against the city of Anaheim and police was filed on Tuesday in Orange County Superior Court over the death of Manuel Diaz.
Police say the 25-year-old gang member was shot Saturday afternoon after officers approached three men who were acting suspiciously in an alleyway in Anaheim and the men ran away.
The shooting has sparked rowdy protests outside the apartment complex where the shooting occurred. On Saturday night, police fired pepper spray and bean bag rounds to try to quell the unrest.
Anaheim police Sgt. Bob Dunn says the department cannot comment on pending litigation.
