Fans react to the death of Don Cornelius

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Celebrities react to the death of "Soul Train" creator Don Cornelius Wednesday:

    — "Part of every person's soul who grew up on Soul Train died with him... On his tombstone should read his immortal words: 'I'm Don Cornelius, and as always in parting, we wish you love, peace and soul!'" — The Rev. Jesse Jackson.

    — "Don Cornelius was a pioneer & a trailblazer. He was the first African-American to create, produce, host & more importantly OWN his own show." — Earvin "Magic" Johnson.

    ___

    — "God bless him for the solid good and wholesome foundation he provided for young adults worldwide, and the unity and brotherhood he singlehandedly brought about with his most memorable creation of 'Soul Train.'" — Aretha Franklin.

    ___

    — "We all have a great debt. His work in the 60s and 70s helped us to see, again, that human beings, we're more alike than we were unalike and the music and the people he showed allowed us to see. Showed us how the music, the gifts of the African American, to this country and to the world were great gifts and belonged to everybody all the time." — Maya Angelou.

    ___

"RIP the peerless Don Cornelius. Awesomely funky Soul Train was my first exposure to MUSIC. Thank you Don" — musician Tom Morello of "Rage Against the Machine" and "Audioslave."

    ___

    — "I am shocked and deeply saddened at the sudden passing of my friend, colleague, and business partner Don Cornelius. Don was a visionary pioneer and a giant in our business. Before MTV there was 'Soul Train,' that will be the great legacy of Don Cornelius. His contributions to television, music and our culture as a whole will never be matched. My heart goes out to Don's family and loved ones." — Quincy Jones.

    ___

    — "The Soul Train legacy will show you how great this man was. And Soul Train became such a great icon, not only did black people want to be on Soul Train, but you had Elton John, you had The Bee Gees, you had ever white artists wanting to be on. Soul Train became the thing to do. Don Cornelius didn't do pop artists the way that a lot of the shows did black artists; he included everybody on his show." — songwriter Kenny Gamble.

    ___

    — "I have known him since I was19-years-old and James Brown had me speak on 'Soul Train.' He brought soul music and dance to the world in a way that it had never been shown and he was a cultural game changer on a global level." — The Rev. Al Sharpton.

    ___

"So sad! A great guy & happy memories from Solid Gold & StarSearch: (hash)RIP" — Robin Leach.

    ___

    — "Don Cornelius was simply a genius and the contributions he made to music and our culture are second to none. I will always treasure the fond memories I have of working with Don over the years and being part of the history that he created through Soul Train. He will truly be missed and my heart and prayers go out to his family." — Patti LaBelle.

    ___

"R.I.P. Don Cornelius. The man who brought soul to the train and love to so many." — actor David Boreanaz.

    ___

    — "Next to Berry Gordy, Don Cornelius was hands down the MOST crucial non-political figure to emerge from the civil rights era post 68. the craziest most radical thing of all is I don't even consider Soul Train his most radical statement. Yes the idea of the young black teenager NOT mired in legal trouble on the 6 o'clock news getting camera time was a new idea to most.so of course the fact the U.S. really got its first vicarious look at our culture was amazing. But the TRUE stroke of genius in my opinion was how Don managed to show US how important we were. Which was NOT an easy task." — ?uestlove of The Roots.

    ___

    — "RIP Don Cornelius. LOVE PEACE AND SOOOOUUULLLL 4eva" — Snoop Dogg.

    ___

"Sad to hear about the passing of Don Cornelius of Soul Train fame. Grateful to him that he turned me on to so much great music." — musician Billy Corgan of "Smashing Pumpkins."

    ___

    — "Really sorry to hear the news about Don Cornelius. He was quite the maverick in his time. Soul Train had a tremendous impact. Sad." — Slash.

    ___

    — "R.I.P Mr. Don Cornelius thank you for leaving behind a legacy of Soul. You gave so many a chance to be seen and heard." — Ledisi.

    ___

    — "Sad to hear of passing of Don Cornelius, creator of Soul Train. He was a super nice man. Had many nice talks w/ him at the golf range. RIP" — comedian Jon Lovitz.

    ___

"RIP don cornelius. A legend, a pioneer, a genius. In your immortal words "love peace & soul" make God boogie & Jesus do the Robot." — Marlon Wayans.

For many years it was American Bandstand at 11 and Soul Train at noon every Saturday like clockwork. we didn't go out and play until after Soul Train went off the air at 1. Thanks Don, for the years of great entertainment and some inspiration to go into radio.

This ol' white boy loved to watch and listen to Soul Train. Mr. Cornelius, I always thought, epitomized "cool". This is the hardest part of getting old....losing people that you admire. Won't be too long, Don....I'll see you.

Soul Train was a Saturday staple in our home! Learned a lot of new moves from that show back in the day! Don Cornelius was a pioneer in this industry creating just what people needed to see. That's how it lasted so long!

I was very fortunate to have know Don Cornelius for many years growing up as a teenager in Chicago and having his son Tony as a High School friend. Soul Train started out as a local dance show on UHF Channel 32 in Chicago, and many of my friends had the privlidge of dancing on his show. His son Tony was my car enthusiast buddy and is a great guy as his dad was. Don will be sorely missed as he was my inspiration for pursuing the motion picture industry where I have done very well over the last 32 years. Don my man you will be sorely missed by the people whose lives you touched in a positive way and by your family and close friends. I hope that you find Peace wherever you are.
      Sincerely, Marvin Towns Jr.

I can remember watching Soul Train as a child. Don introduced me to the Jackson 5, The Sylvers, Rufus Fea. Chaka Khan just to name a few artists. Its also true that Don even welcomed pop acts like Elton John and the duo, Hall and Oates. As Quest Love of the Roots mentioned, he introduced black culture into the mainstream and helped make black beautiful! Don, I want to thank you for allowing me to see our culture on a positive tip. I also want to thank you expanding my musical taste. You will be missed. As you used to say, I wish you love, peace and SOUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Forever and for always...

I loved Don Cornelius. I was a teenager and every saturday we had to hurry up and clean the house so we could turn on "Soul Train" at 1 o'clock. We would watch for the hour and my brothers and sisters (5 of us) would all line up and do the soul train line-up. Loved it and have so many wonderful memories of it. I just loved Michael Jackson when the Jackson 5 would appear on soul train. MIchael and I were the same age. Even after 40 years my family did the soul train line up at christmas. Can't move to much anymore but still enjoy it. You will be very much missed Mr. Cornelius. Thanks for the memories. Oh by the way, we are a caucasian family. Not that it matters but 40 years ago it sure mattered. Thanks Don for allowing us to understand each other alittle better. RIP.

It was another sad day to hear about Mr. Don Cornelius. I feel like one of my family members died. He made Sat morning / afternoons ..the best entertainment possible for all of my 9 siblings . We did our chores & couldn't wait to get in front of the TV to dance the famous " SoulTrain line" with them. Then watch what different groups perform. Im sad that he felt he had to make this decision .In 2000 I was able to go to SoulTrain ..& it was a dream come true. My condolence to his family ..he will be greatly missed & we appreciated all that he did.

I remember when it came on twice every Saturday at Noon and 6PM EDT/EST. I am 33 years old so Im not old enough to remember all of the pre 1990s episodes but as long as I shall live,I will always remember the voice and the famous quote. He changed the world in a HUGE way for everyone, especially African Americans. I guess not even he thought it would get as large as it did. Mr Cornelius,we wish you respect love peace and soooouuuul!!!! R.I.P.

I was 10 years old (1973) when he came to New Orleans. My sister and I were walking on Canal St and his limo pulled up. He rolled down the window and invited my sister and me inside. We drove to his hotel where we exited and later my sister was invited on a date with him. He came over to the house and introduced himself to my family. A real nice person. Yes!, it's true my sister really did date Don Cornelius. I never forgot that day. RIP Don God Bless.
