Farmer forbidden from selling raw milk outside Pa.

Judge blocks Pa. farmer from selling raw milk, considered unsafe, to out-of-state consumers

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- A central Pennsylvania farmer has been prohibited from selling to out-of-state customers unpasteurized milk, which the government says can be unsafe.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Wednesday it obtained a permanent injunction against Daniel Allgyer (AL'-guy-ur) and his Rainbow Acres Farm in Kinzers.

The agency says raw milk can contain harmful bacteria. The milk can be legally sold within Pennsylvania but not elsewhere. A federal judge granted an injunction Feb. 2.

Allgyer argued he was leasing his cows through a private organization to consumers in Washington, D.C. He can still sell raw milk in Pennsylvania. He hasn't returned a message seeking comment.

Another dairy, Family Cow, in Chambersburg, resumed bottling raw milk earlier this month following an 11-day shutdown after dozens of illnesses were reported in four states.

I drank raw milk for years and never got sick, this was in Mont,& N.H.

If you were on a farm, then it was fresh raw milk, from that day or the day before. The problem is when bacteria have time to grow to harmful levels. You can't control what happens to it when it leaves the farm.
      • SteveO 3 mths ago
        @ Goddess.
Nor can you controle what happens to fish, chicken. So what you are saying is it is OK for our government to insist on dictating what we have for breakfast?
      • Chris 3 mths ago
@Goddess: You can control what you buy. If you aren't sure about something, DON'T BUY IT. Caveat Emptor!

i grew up on a dairy farm drinking fresh raw milk all the time.
      never broke a bone.
      rarely sick.
      strong immune system.
      .
of course we're all a bit different, but them's the facts in my case.
      • goddess 3 mths ago
Your raw milk was fresh - milked that day or the day before. The problem is when there is enough time for bacteria to grow to harmful levels.

You've got to be kidding? Goddess knows something about microbiology and instead of trying to understand, y'all ditz her? With idiots like you loss in the nation we are truly F-d... Too bad, had high hopes for this whole government by the people thing...

My dad used to have a dairy farm too, and I used to eat Corn Flakes with fresh raw milk every morning. My dad sold his farm long time ago and today I still make cheese at home with raw milk I buy from local farms.

if people want to buy and consume raw milk they should be allowed to do so.

Ok, I usually just sit back and read and keep my mouth shut, but I've had enough of this Sh*t. I was a sickly child and the doctors put me on raw milk from the Dairy. Straight from the udder to the glass.
If there is a problem with unpasturized milk, it is the health status of the cow, or the shelf life of the milk.
The FDA is full of COW MANURE!!!

there is a small child in my family that doctors said had allergies to everything losing weight did not know if she would live in and out of hospital one of the oldest drs suggested raw milk within a week she was better within 2 weeks was gaining weight now is a healthy 5 year old with no allergies.the people who stand to gain from your child's sickness don't want you to have access to whole natural healthy foods and the immunities you get from whole raw milk it will keep just as long as processed milk as long as the cows are healthy and checked regularly there is no problem. i myself was raised on raw Jersey cow milk.pasteurized milk makes me physically ill can still drink raw milk with no problem.

Hey, I grew up on unpasteurized milk too, but at the same time listeria is a very real, very dangerous thing. I knew where the milk was coming from, since I my family owned the cows, but do you really want to trust unpasteurized supermarket milk?

      Raw milk: Bad.
Arsenic in Apple Juice: Yeah, why not?
      • Lauren 3 mths ago
        You are brilliant!
      • JAMES 3 mths ago
The arsenic in the apple juice came from the seed of the apple. It is next to harmless in its natural state. It has to be refined to be harmful. Almonds have more arsenic than just about any seed. But there safe to eat.
      • waxonwaxoff 3 mths ago
The poison is in the dose. You can die from too much vitamin a. The amount of arsenic in apple seeds is insignificant.

and where is the FDA when people are poisoned from food that THEY Supposedly inspect??? Just another Govt entity being paid off by Big Business..
    • kittygomeow!  •  Mobile, Alabama  •  3 mths ago
So we can't have raw milk which "may be unsafe" but cigs, MSG, chemical additives, and genetic modification (all of which are proven to cause cancer) are just fine and dandy. Gotcha...

      Raw milk so bad
Guns to drug cartels good...yeah we have our priorities straight in this country right??
I grew up on a farm and drank raw milk all the time and so did my 4 brothers and sisters and cousins and family for generations...No one ever got sick or died..We live well into our 80's and 90's. Guess what we don't need the F frincking DA telling us what to drink..And what Yahoo failed to report is they raided this poor guys farm ( an Amish farmer keep in mind ) with guns drawn...Yeah that was necessary..

Imagine! The government has to protect us from ouselves. Yes, I DRINK RAW MILK! It's the "golden rule", i.e., he who has the gold makes the rules, as in corporate milk processors and the crooked FDA.

how did people ever live without to goverment to regulate milk.viva revolution!!!!!!!!!!!
    • Tiger  •  3 mths ago
we're stuck drinking milk with growth hormones and other crap, but we can't drink raw milk even if its from cows Without hormones or nasty chemicals. i say as long as the farmer is ready to face a law suit from someone stupid, or let his customers know that there is a chance of getting sick, he should be aloud to sell it.
    • who_cares  •  3 mths ago
The last time I bought raw milk from Pennsylvania farms they had special permits to do so. This meant having their cows tested periodically for diseases. Some pezzonovante just wants to make it difficult for people to make there own fresh mozzerella. I'll buy my own #$%$ cow.

Caveat Emptor! This nanny state is out of control!
    • Vote Them Out  •  3 mths ago
Why is the government getting involved in the sale of milk. I was raised on raw milk and I am 67 years old, no heart trouble, no blood diseases, no bad bacteria in my tum tum. My son was raised on whole raw milk and he has two bueatiful daughters and they are all fine. Whats the big deal? You keep the milk tools steralized and you clean the cows teats very good and you have really good milk.

I need to buy a good Milkgoat. Nothing like fresh raw milk everyday.
    • Lubahound  •  Los Angeles, California  •  3 mths ago
I remember drinking raw milk as a kid and never getting sick, the problem today is that the wussie kids were raising can't handle any germs, put down the hand sanitizer and let kids be exposed to some dirt, I also recall there not being a prevalence of food allergies, autism or ADHD, go figure.

People will believe what they want. Milk right from the udder to the table is the real deal. What you buy in the stores today is nothing more than colored water. It is not only cheaper buying direct from the farm or Amish, it is healthier for you. I can buy it cheaper make my own butter, whip cream and cheese from it. Try doing and saving at the store with that milk....never happen. I guess next it will be illegal and against the law to eat the eggs I get from chickens that free range. It's like anything else in the nanny state of Pa., if you don't pay top price for it at the store it's not good for you. But, that's because they don't get their cut of taxes....it's all about the money honey.
