Fashion and beauty brands score high at "Internet Oscars"

YSL Experience is the beauty and cosmetics Webby Award winner.

Vogue.com has proven "geeks can be chic" for a second year running by scooping the 2012 Webby Awards People's Voice Award for best fashion website, while Yves Saint Laurent's new web portal ysl-experience.com has been named best beauty and cosmetics site.

A video explaining the new ysl-experience portal, where users are encouraged to customize the website via the "YSL by Me" experience, can be seen at http://youtu.be/zwjyosXsrV4. It beat competition from websites including pop star Rihanna's site for her fragrance Reb'l Fleur.

Other prize winners from the realm of style include SHOWstudio and glamour.com's beauty channel. The latter won the People's Voice prize for its beauty channel glamour.com/beauty, while fashion site SHOWstudio -- which hit the headlines last week for pioneering the "first high-fashion Instagram shoot" -- was named the Webby Award Winner in the fashion category.

While the complete list of winners was announced May 1, the 16th annual Webby Awards gala won't take place until May 21.

Other noteworthy winners include British online fashion retailer ASOS, which took the Webby prize for retail, beating nominees including designer menswear site mrporter.com and gift-giving service wantful.com.

The international ceremony honoring the best of the internet famously avoids lengthy acceptance speeches by imposing a five-word limit upon victors at its annual gala. At last year's ceremony in New York US Vogue editor Anna Wintour famously quipped, "Sometimes geeks can be chic."

Check out this year's five-word speeches when the event is streamed live May 21.
