    Fashion Merchant Says PETA Needs a Makeover

    Feather Hair Extensions, one of the country’s hottest fashion trends, became a cultural battle ground this month when People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals PETA began a campaign to re-brand the use of natural feathers as abusive to birds.

    HairWisp maintains that the feather industry is inherently humane, as long as the animals are harvested with respect. Owner Brendan Woodward says, “Mankind is an omnivorous, mostly naked biped that has no choice but to fashion clothing from the materials we find around us. I will not apologize for selling beautiful feathers from remarkable birds.”

    The trendy use of bird plumes has been likened to wearing other animal products like silk, leather or fur by PETA.    

    “We hope our product can remind consumers that nature is an extraordinary fashion designer too. We appreciate the natural beauty of what we wear.”

    Perhaps PETA should be applauding the use of natural feathers for fashion. Birds that are bred and raised for their beautiful feathers are treated like royalty compared to poultry raised for eggs and meat.

    Fashion-grade feathers command a premium price because they are difficult to produce.


    In order for feathers to reach their full potential of beauty and value, the bird must be kept absolutely healthy and happy. Any bird that is sick or stressed will grow ugly feathers that lack the strength and fullness required for fashion.

    Each rooster can produce between 200-400 feathers in its lifetime. At a wholesale value between two and four dollars per feather, these birds are very valuable and receive the highest level of care.

    With an emphasis on quality over quantity, cages are checked daily for comfort and located indoors to prevent birds from becoming agitated or scared. Each bird receives a generous supply of food and water.
